BOEING STARTS ASSEMBLY OF 1ST FLIGHTWORTHY STARLINER CREW TAXI VEHICLE AT KENNEDY SPACEPORT

The Boeing CST 100 Starliner is one of two private astronaut capsules – along with the SpaceX Crew Dragon – being developed under a commercial partnership contract with NASA to end our sole reliance on Russia for crew launches back and forth to the International Space Station (ISS).

I didn't read the entire article but it looks suspiciously like an Apollo capsule.

Well Boeing 787s look suspiciously like 707s minus two engines.

Function defines form

But with room for 7 crew instead of 3.

Optimizing ballistic velocity drag, re-entry surface heating and glide ratio pretty much set the shape. While a bi-plane 787 would look cool, it just doesn't work.

Resurrecting an old thread, I was watching YouTube video of the landing this morning at WSMR. Thought it interesting that the initial videos were from a NASA WB57, they still have three flying apparently. Used to work them occasionally out at ELP. Also interesting that they are confident enough on the trajectories to land the thing right in the middle of the dry lake bed.

Capsules and blivets are fine but I want NASA to build this one. Resurrecting TWA would be a nice side benefit! I had this model on my dresser as a kid. One of the coolest models I ever built, at least in my grade school brain.

John, isn’t that pretty much the space-x rocket verbatim ? Even the TWA connection as far as having an eccentric visionary CEO.

What was not obvious from the landing coverage was that the capsule missed its target i.e. it was supposed to dock with the ISS but was not able to achieve the same orbit so no docking. The ISS crew will not be getting any Christmas presents (which the capsule was supposed to deliver) this year because Boeing has been a bad boy.

OMG, John! My father built one of those when I was a kid about a hundred years ago. No idea whatever happened to that model. Have a bunch that he built of AA airplanes - an Electra in 1959, a 72-100 and a 707 in 1961. Thanks for sharing that memory!
