The Icon A5 looks awesome. Then I read it has a no-fuel payload of 430 pounds. That's two grown men and 7 gallons of gas.
Is the plan for all the owners to cheat a bit on weight?
Someone tell me how this works out in real life.

google "Icon A5 crash" and make sure you're sitting down. over-priced, and under-performing from what I see.
for half the price you could have an Air-Cam, the safety of 2 motors, and a very good history. For half price you could have a Widgeon too

As someone else noted before, a Cessna 185 on Aerocet amphibs would cost less. Also, this: Username Protected wrote: Or, my wife and I and 26 gallons. If I ever got one of those little playthings, the last thing I’d do is put some dude in the passenger seat!

Someone tell me how this works out in real life. Yes, a lot probably cheat on weight. The gross weight was set by regulation to meet light sport specs. It likely performs fine with 2x200 pounders and full fuel. Just don’t fly it up a blind canyon and expect it to out climb the terrain. Greg

Someone tell me how this works out in real life. My opinion (worth what you paid for it) is the SeaRey is a better buy. About half the cost and a better power to weight ratio. Also the SeaRey can fly with the doors open or closed or any variation in between.

I had a SeaMax. Of the choices. In the category it is the fastest and has the most payload. You can do all the fun things and have a decent cross country cruiser. It will not handle rough water as well as the others. Two ft waves will make you think the bottom is coming out. Sponsons are very close to the water thus easy to knock off.

The single post down to the sponsons does look flimsy. The gear looks nice. I'd prefer to see some Icon-style inward opening/removable windows in that canopy.... especially if inverted (on land or water!)

Someone tell me how this works out in real life. Randy - I have serial #111. While climb power could be better, it can theoretically fly a little heavy. It is not a cross country machine, so 10 gallons is plenty for weekend flying. I just went out today for little over an hour and burned 5 gallons. My other plane is a Phenom 300, so this is on the opposite side of the spectrum but very enjoyable flying. Low and slow. Like really low, 50-100 ft over the Gulf of Mexico (at least 500 ft away from people and objects). Fun. Attachment: IMG_3985.jpeg Attachment: IMG_3946.jpeg Attachment: IMG_3993.jpeg
