That's in our lab! Open source means the design can be shared amongst different manufacturers. Still in the testing phase, hope to build an improved iteration next year.

Awesome!

Hmm... I've never seen that definition. The rest of the world seems to consider open source to mean that it is publicly available. What you and the article describe is a closed source licensing agreement with NDAs, etc. https://opensource.com/resources/what-open-source . That's fine, I just think it's misleading to call that open source.

I think the rights are a bit in flux, and i am not an expert on the data rights. Should be a game changer in regards to cost.

Absolutely. Fred, do you know if there are any thought or plans to move up to larger turbines if this program is successful?

Looks like a large RC turbojet. That’s unfortunately not going to have any utility for general aviation. Nice concept though. What we need is a 350 hp turboprop that burns 20 gph and costs 60k.

Since it is being developed internally by the Air Force the resulting design should be in the public domain.

Yes the Russians, Chinese and North Koreans would like that.

You know that a brand new TSIO550 that makes 350hp is more than twice that much? List price is $135,000, with a $28,000 core charge!

It’s got 10 times the parts and 10 times the complexity so it should cost that much!

Honestly - we will see electric aircraft long before we see a GA turbine that's low cost. Not because it can't be done (it's been doable for 50 years), but because there are players who want their fiefdom intact.

I wonder what would happen if we put four TJ100 jet engines (the kind used on SubSonex) on Bonanza-size airframe...

Below about 120-150 knots it would be a bit of a slug, but after that I bet it'd be a hoot!

Fuel consumption would be another matter...

Stop listening to political propaganda from people who make billions of dollars, take your ticket and fly to China ,Russia , Israel and meet aviation enthusiasts, GA enthusiasts in any Coutry are the same as you, politicians in Russia and China flying on brand new Golfstreams and use US dollars.
