Hello all, Navy helicopter pilot and GA fixed wing guy here. Looking for a first personally owned aircraft, and leaning toward Bonanzas and Mooneys. Which do you all recommend, lol.

Thanks all; kinda figured you were partial to Bonanzas. Is there a preferred section to post in if I’m looking for someone to do an annual and/or PPI in my area? (Memphis,TN)

(Memphis,TN) You could post a question as a separate thread. Or go to ABS (american bonanza society ) for a list.

Welcome Case! Being both Navy AND Rotary- you have already proven the mental deficiency required to own your own airplane Heck- I did it and was "only" Air Force In terms of Bonanza vs Mooney or anything else- you will get many opinions. I am biased but just say fly them and compare. Tough to argue against how sweet a Bonanza flys. I really enjoy my A36. I'm sure there are BT bros around Memphis who would be happy to demonstrate why Bonanzas are so well regarded. If you are in Clemson I will offer the same.

Hello and welcome, I agree that you fit the profile as an aircraft owner! I have flown many mooneys and I like them. They are a fast, efficient, cheap to operate aircraft. Many years ago I setup an excel sheet to choose the cheapest aircraft out of a fleet and after about 2 hours in the air the mooneys always came out on top. That being said, if all I want to take is me, my girlfriend, and a SMALL bag each, its a great aircraft. If I want to fill up all 4 seats, take bags and ski gear, have my kids fall asleep in the back seat with it stuffed for travel, then hands down the Bo is the way to go! It is not as fast as the mooney but much more comfortable in general and even easier to fly and almost as fast. I also watched a Bo save a guy on landing where the mooney would not have been so kind. So, IMO, small, fast:Mooney. Comfortable, easier to fly, lots to carry: Bo. As you see in my profile I fly a P35 w/IO550. Good luck!

I've owned both, a 1984 Mooney 252 and a 1989 A36TN. Both are great planes that meet a certain mission. So which you go for depends. The Mooney is fast and economical to fly but has limited useful load. Some complain about space but I was never uncomfortable in mine and the back seats are find. Limited storage. Need to be on the numbers when landing as it is a slick airplane. The A36 is a better for useful load but less economical to fly. Easy to fly and land. Both are great IFR platforms. So what is your mission and that will inform your decision.
