Hello BeechTalk,
Well we finally bought our first airplane, a turbo normalized 1971 A36, E-279, and it was totally unplanned.
My wife Julee and I started flying when we were 16 and began our careers in General Aviation flying everything from banner towing and glider towing on the east coast to pipeline patrol in TX and OK. After graduating from Embry-Riddle in Daytona, Julee was hired by Piedmont Airlines flying Dash-8s and I joined the Air Force and our professional flying careers started to get in the way of burning 100LL. I am now an F-16 Weapons School Instructor Pilot at Nellis AFB NV and Julee is an Anchorage based 747 pilot for UPS.
I joined BeechTalk a little over a year ago and began obsessively researching what airplane would allow us to (eventually) fulfill our primary mission, a 450 NM trip to visit family. After countless hours combing every forum on BT, ABS, AOPA, CSOBeech, etc, we settled on an early model A36 which we would look to upgrade over the years of ownership with a turbo-normalizer, wing tanks, oxygen, extended baggage, a modern panel...you know how the list continues. Well based on my Air Force PCS timeline, we didn't really need an airplane for another couple of years but it was never too early to learn as much as possible and compulsively search Trade-a-Plane and Controller every day over my morning cup of coffee.
Well as fate/luck/happenstance or whatever you want to call it would have it, I stumbled across a low time, highly upgraded, well cared for A36 on a Saturday morning in late August. It was an incredible value. After calling Julee who was somewhere in Asia at the time I picked up the phone and called the owner, a long time pilot who was finally hanging it up after owning over 25 airplanes and flying for more than 40 years. After several phone calls to him, his mechanic, the previous owner, the previous mechanic, my mechanic, and a Bonanza flight instructor, we had an offer and a plan in under 24 hours. We arranged to travel to KSMX the following weekend to meet the owner and fly the airplane. That trip ended with a 2 hour checkout, a great inspection report and a signed bill of sale. By the following Friday we returned to pick up the plane and in a total of 13 days we had N9268Q, our very first airplane, parked on the ramp at KVGT.
The short list of components are as follows: IO-550B Upgrade FliteCraft Turbo Normalizing System JL Osborne Tip Tanks Turbo GAMIjectors Insight G2 GEM Gami Baffle Kit (#2/#6) SkyOx Built-In O2 GNS 430 WAAS STEC 50 Autopilot w/ GPSS KT-74 ADS-B Out Flap/Gap Seals 1400# Useful Load
We can't wait to fly the airplane as much as our schedules allow and once again involve ourselves in the GA community. If you are in the Las Vegas area (or within flying distance) we would love to hear from you and find time to increase our knowledge of Bonanza flying and ownership. I have already completed the BPPP online course and plan to work my way to becoming a BPPP flight instructor as time allows. Julee will likely follow suit.
As you are all well aware, the desire to fiddle, tinker and upgrade these wonderful airplanes is a chronic condition. I think the best advice we will try to follow for now is simple; put gas in it and go flying! That being said, we are looking at purchasing the following upgrades in the near term and would love any additional information or recommendations you all have:
Mountain High O2D2 Pulse Demand Regulator and E-Z Breathe Boom Cannula Approach Aviation SmartSpace Extended Baggage Compartment SureFly Electronic Ignition LED Landing/Taxi Light (hopefully with a flasher mod)
We would not be airplane owners without the support and resources of BeechTalk. We look forward to becoming more active members of not only this forum but of the Bonanza and General Aviation communities writ large.
Our warmest thanks,
Luke & Julee Weyhmuller N9268Q KVGT

I'm not too far north of you in the Provo, UT area and would love to meet up for breakfast sometime. Bryce Canyon would be a perfect spot.

Congrats on the plane Luke! Nice traveling machine I’m sure you are enjoying your assignment at Nellis. I left Eglin AFB and got out 19 years ago. Still miss some things.
