Hi everyone
i am curious how much have people spent on their older (possibly neglected) "v" tail restoration projects.
I am not looking for advice on "whats too much and whats worth it" as i realize we all have different opinions, tastes and budgets as well as different motives and I know there can be no limit, aside of finances, for restoration of a great classic. I only want to know what has been spent.
I would appreciate your stories as i intend to use them to enlist my wife's support on a future project.
thanks in advance

Are you nucking futz??

If the stories are even remotely accurate you’ll be sinking your own ship.

Well, that's a touch harsh.

I started dating my wife while doing major repair/restoration after a gear up landing. Not only did she support it, she actively participated it.

Indeed, the family joke (not true, but I don't let facts get in the way of a good story) is that I asked her to marry me after I stuffed her into the tail cone of the bonanza for an afternoon with a can of kerosene and a tooth brush. She is much smarter than me and so I had to get her a little loopy before she would agree to such a proposal.

Cost is based on what the project needs ...also on the end game...a flip? or a keeper ......my last keeper cost me right at 300k .....but in general it is wayyyyy cheaper to buy one that someone else had done the work.....No stores worth telling really ..just lots of work and dealing with shops....unless it is a passion project.... then open check book and fun and no wife approvals or lie about what the parts cost..... :D

Some personal details will really help iron out the costs, which are directly proportional to the stuff you do yourself and what you have access to.

Do you have hangar space, or a garage workshop?
What tools/tooling do you have and what would you have buy/hire out?
Where do you live?
Are there aspects of a restoration that you would not personally do? Structural work, Rigging, Paint, Electrical, Avionics, Glass, Interior, Engine?

I bought my S35 knowing it had a paper annual,
Didn’t even go to look at it,
The pictures and tone of the seller made it obvious,
But the price was reflective of the situation.

I dropped about 30k in it, which included a 12k used engine.
Any removed hardware was replaced with new,
Lotsa little things, mostly a mechanical rehab.
Nothing cosmetic, interior or avionics.

The work was done by two guys, an IA and an A&P.
Paid them cash, they worked on it regularly but not intensely.

Had I have a traditional shop do it, it would have cost much, much more.

My V35 has been in the shop since December ‘16. Having put roughly 4500 hours on it since I bought it in ‘82, it was time for another upgrade- the first in the last 20 years.

It already had tip tanks, TKS and a full Mike Smith conversion. I bought a G500 and JPI930, and then the G500txi was announced. Sold the instruments and trashed the wiring harness. My S-Tec 60-2 quit and the factory said it was too old to overhaul.

The new panel has a G500txi, dual EIS500s, WX500, GTN750 & 650, G600 autopilot, G5, AOA, and everything else that Garmin had for sale. New glass, paint, interior and other upgrades. New Hartzell super scimitar prop with TKS deice approval. TKS replumbed, any corrosion removed, new landing gear bushings, gear overhauled, interior soundproofed.

$265k and counting. It should be ready soon. It is really a thrifty endeavor compared with drugs, ex-wives and gambling. Not to mention far more rewarding.

If you have the funds and are addicted to flying, go for it.

If you have to ask the cost....you probably didn't want to spend that. :peace:

I don't think you ever stop restoring/upgrading.

We've had our 73 V35B since 1989. We've been upgrading and restoring ever since, and will probably continue to as long as we are her caretakers.

Build up or set aside large sums before each project. there's an old adage that the two most expensive phrases in aviation are "while you're at it" and "While it's already open."

They're funny to chuckle out in the hangar, but the truth is in the long term they will save money. Changing out a radio now and a transponder in 6 months will cost far more than doing them at the same time. Plan on doing everything with the panel at the same time. It will be costly with plenty of AOG, but neither as much as doing them separately.

:peace:
