Wow, chrome turns blue about 1000F. Think motorcycle exhausts...

Melt the lineman's skin off hot; the Eclipse would occasionally get one during a careless chocking.

Very, at 0 KIAS.

Heating element can be > 100 watts. It has to reach well over freezing in -30 C air going 300 knots.

You could build it with a thermostat to limit the high temperature, but that's another thing to fail.

The type I work around (Lear) aren’t chrome. They’re a dull light brown color. The bluing is from leaving them on too long on the ground.

Yep- some airplanes' heaters have a controller to do that for you (mostly for when you're on the ground). That tends to keep the pitot tubes at a temperature of approximately 2nd~ish degree burn (instead of an instant 3rd). :D

The Multi-Function probes (like pitot/static probes, but with more holes for sensing AOA & sideslip in addition to static press) on our Gulfstreams are regulated to 150 deg C. They look almost exactly like the one pictured above (same manufacturer). We have 4 of those.

We turn them on after engine start & leave them on until after landing.

During troubleshooting on the Piper Meridian, I pointed the Chinese IR thermometer at the tubes on the ground and got 150 degrees f on both. I do not recall if the tubes get more current when the plane is in the air. If a failure occurs, they could possibly get high current on the ground, but normally a warning would be prudent.

TBMs pitots have a lower output when on the ground so they dont come too hot.
Never replaced one in 1500 hrs.

That's why they're all purple. Unless there's freezing precip ours were always runway items.
