Art, The new tax plan did away with 1031's for aircraft (but did retain them for real estate). It isn't the end of the world...the easiest way to address the issue to sell the current plane and buy the replacement plane in the same tax year (and the order in which you do it doesn't matter nor do you need a Qualified Intermediary and all of the hassle that comes with the 1031 process, etc). -Neal
And don't forget - if you trade in the current plane on the new one most jurisdictions will only apply sales tax to the difference. Put another way, Jason's $3.3 million dollar plane is worth $264,000 in sales tax credit if the GA tax rate is 8%.

But yes agreed The line in the sand is: Have you flown when you really didn't want to fly/feel like flying or even not feel 100% ? Have you flown someplace you didn't want to go? Have you flown in weather you didn't want to fly in? Have you flown equipment you really don't like (poorly equipped, quirky features, intermittent un-diagnosed failures? If the answer to all these is no, you have not experienced the professional side of aviation. The professional HAS to fly. The amateur can call the whole thing off if he/she feels like it. Getting paid alone doesn't get you over the line. Those things make you a more proficient pilot?

It’s all a ruse. Really, Jason bought a duke. Now he looks cool sitting on the ground.

So there is a pole installed somewhere in the cabin?

I don't see any of the jets you mentioned topping the PC-12 starting with the time you walk in the cabin. I'm sure you've looked at the flight times but can't imagine the Cj being that much quicker than the Pc12 after the Cj does the fuel stop. From ATL that PC12 hits a lot of areas, with all the bags and people you want. Just an awesome machine unless you just want to fly a jet and talk about it... Keep your PC12 and charter a few hours in a jet or dry lease.

Owner isn’t a pilot.

You'd be less likely to be SOL if one was AOG or training was delayed. (Did you read Dick Karl's column in the December, 2018 FLYING Magazine? - Different type, but wow jet parts and repair times can be something else). I've never been AOG with my Pilatus. 2 planes cost a lot more than 1.
