Test flight today - 175ktas at 81% power LOP at only 8,500’. Engine smooth like butter. Hottest CHT 379dF.
Holy smokes.
The #1 is still too lean and not contributing enough. It will improve. Next step is to get this performance up high. I think there is a chance at 190ktas up high if I can keep the ignition happy and back off the timing a bit. 185 is in the bag. I’d guess fine wires are in my future. We’ll see once the ceiling clears.
My 58 Baron cruised at 185kts on 25gph. The Toga has a larger cabin and will do this on 17.5gph. I’ve picked up 20kts from first flight via tuning and operation. What a hoot!
Lots more to do. Sweet lord I’ll take one.

And it has a better climb rate up in the teens with the turbo! That’s it this ones off the market.

It finally happened. After thousands of flights, I am AOG on the road for the first time.
I have been chasing a couple of issues in the engine that are unresolved. Its so close to perfect, but this issue has now put me on the ground. I haven’t had time to update here because I have been flying/traveling non-stop. The Toga is an excellent platform for what I am doing and makes long haul travel very comfortable I’m finding.
Pax like the space over the Baron and the rear heat over the Navajo. Even at low altitudes it has been COLD.
I am currently in Memphis. Stopped in for a meeting. On the flight from KY to TN, I noticed the #1 cyl running too lean. It was falling off like it wasn’t getting its share of fuel. It would miss occasionally. I ran on each mag. After running for a while on one mag, the EGT and CHT came back up. Aha, I must have a plug issue. Its possible an injector was clogged also.
We landed uneventfully, and I found a shop on the field. I asked them to replace plugs and clean the injector for me while I was at my mtg. Upon return and departure, more issues.
I have a rythmic miss, it wants to diesel a bit at shut down, pops a little at idle. We RTBd and enjoyed a southern dinner on Beale street.
The aymptoms tell me I have an induction leak somewhere. I checked all of the induction before we began working the injectors and it was tight, however, I did a ringwash with solvents and now I’m wondering if a seal in the intake was compromised.
We’ll explore today when mechanics arrive. I just OHd the mags, which makes me suspect them as well.
Nothing like troubleshooting 1000 miles from home. OTOH, its a blessing this didn’t happen with a plane full of docs in Baja.

It was also less than a single RT 121 ticket from AZ-KY. I need more jet time to get to SPW. I also got to get my hands dirty and the satisfaction of dialing in my whip. How’s that for justification?! :)
