On the 11thleaving Bellingham I was 3/4 through my pretakeoff checklist.... and tower said cleared for takeoff no delay..(I’d not yet even asked for clearance.)
I forgot the mixture.... till 500 ft.

Went to Klawock Alaska.... on Friday I went to go on a local Alaskan flight and in preflight the rt engine was down to 6 qts from 10 in a 3 hr flight. Turning the prop over by hand I had one dead cylinder.

So I borrowed an air compressor and compression tester and found #6 was dead 20/80
Got a new cylinder on the way... with cylinder base wrenches arrived Monday noon. Late Monday we realize the cylinder base wrenches are too long to fit between wing root and bolts...so Tuesday I find a welder and modify the base wrenches to fit...
By 8pm Tuesday new cylinder is on, but not connected.

Sent family home commercial on 17th.

Wednesday we work all day with several issues like exhaust does not align... etc... by 5pm we’re ready for test run... do a run up all is good...do a 30min test flight all is good...

Fill it with gas and leave at 4am for Bellingham.
1:30 into the flight #6 shows sudden rapid rise in c h t . Go full rich c h t goes to 600. Pull the throttle back ... E g t probe 6 shows failed.

Max mp at fl21 is 22in tit one side1250 other side 910 worry about turbo or exhaust leak causing blowtorch damage. I shut it down and declare an emergency.

Un eventful l p v approach to port hardy break out at 1500 and land.

Removed the cowls and nothing truly obvious... no oil loss... there is oil dripping down from the head of new cylinder...

Run up on the ground gets to normal mp, but with 601p it’s only 29.5in. E g t and c h t for number 6 both read low as well as tit for that side.

In rural Canada with no tools. Waiting for a plane to Vancouver so I can go home.

Tripped on curb at aircraft gate and now have sprained ankle to go with dead plane.

How was your week....

You could try calling the maintenance folks at Campbell River that’s not to far.

Been there I feel your pain. I had to leave my commander in Mexico with a bad jug and retrieve it later with a mechanic. It sucked and cost a fortune. This too shall pass...

Ain't it amazing, that image would frighten some people (non aviatiors), but to us it's just a dead engine with a feathered prop.

Despite all the drama and mental agony, you played your cards as well as they can be played.

Sounds like some first class ADM and a mess of good flying stories for around the campfire.

Sorry for all the problems, though...

That photo illustrates something else for me.

In a single, that photo represents an emergency. In a properly flown twin, that photo represents a very expensive inconvenience.....

Well done, proficient twin pilot!

Slap on the back for great flying. No matter how hard we plan, issues like this happen. You make memories, it’s living not just being alive.
Beer on me if I ever meet you.
Mark
