If you use containers over 119 gallons each you’re going to need a CDL, hazmat endorsement, and placards if you plan to drive on a public road.

I'm not sure this is accurate. A lot of us have 280 gallon 100LL tanks on trailers and I think that is perfectly legal to transport.

I would try and negotiate a time frame for when you can have it out by. Just fill up and fly, it’s only about 4 tanks in the Citation no?

It’s definitely accurate; whether it’s being enforced in your area for private vehicles is another matter.

It's enforced in Ohio.

It's 100% accurate in Michigan.

Ironically, per the Hazmat division of the Commercial Vehicle Division of the State Police, it's perfectly legal to fill a 53' trailer with 55 gallon drums (or 119G or less) of diesel fuel (or Jet-A) and drive down the road without any placards...

100LL or gas may be a whole different animal, but I didn't ask...

Depends on the state/county. Most don’t, some do.
Full disclosure: we manufacture fuel trailers up to 990 gal for farm/construction etc use.

NO CDL needed, unless you are commercially transporting the fuel.
A $3 sticker from Amazon on the back of the tank.

Given our nanny state and tendency to over regulate everything, transporting fuel for personal use is relatively unregulated.

Fueling/Contractor Tanks Transporting Gasoline
Bulk Fueling Tanks (Cargo Tanks) – Gasoline
• Built, marked, inspected, and maintained to a USDOT cargo tank specification;
• Class 3 placards and ID #1203 markings, on all four sides of vehicle;
• Hazmat shipping papers and emergency information must be offered and carried;
• Cargo tank may be off-loaded while on the vehicle;
• Vehicle is a commercial motor vehicle; the driver needs a CDL with hazmat and tanker endorsements;
Exception: A farmer with a Minnesota driver’s license, does not need a CDL or endorsements; and,
• A person may not fill and offer for transportation, a specification cargo tank for which a required
periodic retest or reinspection is past due, until the test or inspection is successfully completed.

We get so silly here.

Who is going to enforce these regulations?

Not your typical traffic cop. That kind of thing is left to commercial vehicle enforcement who have the training and equipment, but they are too busy dealing with.... commercial vehicles.

No one is going to jail or even getting a ticket for hauling some Jet-A back to your hangar in the bed of a pickup.

You could pick up used IBC containers to haul the fuel and to filter the fuel a marine Raycor 1000 can filter fuel down to 5 microns.

I know an guy that makes a very good living buying this type of fuel. He resells to folks who "re-refine" it to spec fuel. Interesting business. He empty's everything from car tanks at salvage yards to multiple thousand gallon tanks at power plants.
