I got a lot more serious about checking my tire pressures after one of my best friends was killed in the Lear Jet 60 accident in South Carolina in 2008. There were other issues in that accident, but ultimately started with low tire pressures which caused the tires to fail. I am sure the tires on the 60 are highly stressed compared to other jets but it is still a concern for me. Serious business.

That is the accident that created the focus on tire pressures by training centers and service centers.

They teach No TRs on gravel, sod, and dirt but I didn’t hear anything about a rabbit.

Yep. That was a bad one and a real eye opener about how dangerous low tire pressure can be.

If you bring a Citation into a Cessna Citation Service Center and any tires are low they will not release the plane until those tires are replaced. Always check your tire pressure before taking a plane into a CCSC.

What is the thinking behind that? All I can guess at is that they feel the tire has been compromised by operating at low pressure?

From what I have seen flight departments check pressures before first flight of the day. Private operators on a schedule, and others when they look low they then call maintenance. A few have their own nitrogen and top it up them themselves.

What sort of leak down rate would you expect on a Citation tire?

About 1K each. Tires alone run about $700. Wheels have to be NDT something like every 5 tire changes.

The 550 is slow enough to let that plan work out. :duck:
