He's a friend of a neighbor of mine. I'll see what I can find.

The superdog 2 as what looks like a 180 or 188 tail, the 185 as the bigger ampennage.

The turbine bird dog as a different tail but the fuselage looks like a standard Bird dog fuselage but may have been reinforced for the bigger engine and more fuel.

David,
I think you've given me the clue I've been looking for. Thanks!

I've been thinking about it. The regular birddogs like mine have the 195 tail. The bigger tail was taken from the 185's - I think. Still, it looks a bit shorter than the SIAI tail. Could a 185 tail be modified? Is the SIAI in the experimental exhibition category? That might simplify things.

Good luck!!!

Just got a call back from my neighbor and he put a call in to the owner and left a message. Doesn't see a problem with getting the info you might need. Stand by.

$150k plus or minus $50k.
Expensive to insure as you can imagine in this market.

Bill Woods / Western Wings had one or sale late last year. Looked like a blast.

Cessna built 25 or 27 square-tail Super Bird Dogs for USMC in 1955; the OE-2 (Cessna 321). At some point it was redesignated O1-C, but it is not the classic L19/O-1. The TC has been cancelled/withdrawn.

Many were lost (Korea). There were five remaining with VMO-6 in Okinawa during 1967(?). I visited the Navy Archives and the Naval Aviation Museum. The paper trail ends there.

I have found two in CONUS. Neither are flying. One is still owned by Cessna, and bail’d To a trade school. The other is in private hands and the owner is quite a rascal ... not at all keen that I was able to find him or the plane. He believes that it is worth an even-up trade for a (Grand Champion Warbird grade) Corsair.

I have considerably more info on the orphan if anyone is interested.

Rather than make extensive repairs to ferry the aircraft from Joplin to Mena, it was far more economical to remove the damaged surfaces in Joplin and trailer them home. We repaired everything; had to fab everything except the outboard wing rib. It was a challenging project, more on that later. We learned there are MANY differences in the structure of this Marchetti compared to a L-19.
We painted all the surfaces, then sent a crew to Joplin to reassemble the aircraft. The owner has been flying the plane, even been out west doing some back country flying. He called yesterday and said he would arrive Mena on Sunday so we could begin work on landing gear improvement mod he wants us to design. I get a text this morning from the owner that says "left Montana early, dropping Marchetti about noon". He made it at 12:30. Better pictures and back story soon.
