I am having a pre buy done on a 58 182A. Mechanic sent over these pics today. This is the nose gear attach bracket, it attaches to the belly. Mechanic noted that at some point in the past there must have been a breather line that rubbed up against this bracket and gouged out the metal. The mechanic says he wouldn't sign off an annual on the plane because of this. Does that sound reasonable? Is this a part that is easily found at salvage yards? It seems like it should be. Oh and Cessna wants $7,000 for a new one.

I would tend to agree with the IA, without a DER blessing it as structurally sound, which it may be. Perhaps for a fraction of the cost of replacing it, a DER may say it is OK.

I'm not a mechanic but technically speaking I think your IA is correct, but practically speaking the part is probably fine. It's been painted and has probably been flying like that for thousands of hours. Can you find a salvage replacement? That would probably be the least expensive and most risk free way to go. You might find a DER that says it's OK but I would say that is not super likely.

Should not be a big problem to find salvage or NOS somewhere. I am not an AP but no way i would accept that.

I'm betting those short mountain strips. Maybe no strip at all.

AC43.13 gives you 10% of material thickness for corrosion removal or chafing, but that's quite a bit more. I'd agree with your IA based on the photo. 7 grand for s new one is a rip off. Should be able to score one for 500$ from salvage.

That's exactly the thing you want to find on a pre buy and not after buying! I would make the seller fix or at least give you the replacement part, as Byron says the cost could be anywhere on a huge range $500 to $7000 and you want to put the work and risk on the seller rather than trying to guess on a price adjustment.

I'm an airframe engineer with an IA. I work for DER's (but I'm not one) and design and write their repair instructions.

That's a little too much material removed to get a blessing without some real analysis being done... and you probably can't do that analysis unless you've got the original manufacturing data to determine safety margins.

All that liability out of the way, I'll say that I wouldn't be afraid of flying it as-is. But you'll never get me to sign it off. I bet you can find several to choose from if you start calling the salvage yards. Much easier and your mechanic will sleep better.

Would that be replaced anyway if you upgraded to a 206 fork?

I think it may be this part, not 100% sure yet if the part number is correct but not expensive anyways

Haven't had a chance to look at the equipment/option list but I don't think a large nose fork was a factory option that year. Would have to go aftermarket.

No to hijack the thread, but I have seen that stuff on Bonanza motor mounts when somebody is not careful about isolating throttle, mixture or prop cables appropriately.

What frustrates me is that kind of chafing damage occurs over many, many hours and is, IMHO, inexcusable.

I agree with the other posters, though, that I would not let that one go.

There are parts available from sources other than OEM and the SELLER should have no problem finding a replacement.
