Someone just got all excited about Dukes after seeing a Duke for sale, so here is an Aerostar that is for sale (at the Flight Shop).
It has A/C, Intercoolers, Radar, a KFC200 AP, and low time props, all good things. I could not locate a picture to determine what ice protection it has or make any kind of evaluation on it's condition. Bill and Craig and the rest of the crew at The Flight Shop are good people, if someone is looking for a 601P, this plane is worth a call.

If (when) Todd comes back maybe he'll do a snappy youtube video on why Aerostar's are cool (too).

He's rocking that 396 on the yoke!

VGs, and I think boots, can't tell if it has an alcohol windshield.

The paint goes with the orange velour on the seats, the only mod I'd do, (if it hasn't already been done), is the electric door seal pump, otherwise this plane looks like a great starting place for doing improvements as finances allow.

Aerostars are such complete aircraft. Run them fast or efficiently and they still go the distance in style. I don't know why there isn't a larger demand for them.

Who does BT recommend for a prebuy on Aerostars and who does in depth training for the aircraft? I've read through about 1/3 of this thread, and it may of been covered and I missed it.

Where are you based?

Don Smith with Aerostar World Inc in Dothan, AL is a good bet for the eastern parts of the US. Few people with more experience working/flying them than him (he has 18000 hrs in Aerostars alone). In the Western parts of the US, Aerostar Aircraft can do it and they know their stuff. There are numerous other parties as well - my mechanics here in LA services 3 of them and have a lot of experience with them, so if you're in these parts of the world I can pass their contact details. Aerostar Owners Association also have names to give you, as well as Forrest Ward who posts here.

One word: Insurance.

This year, the insurance on my 601P/SS700 ($250k, $1M smooth) was 25% less than the $70k minimally insured B55 that I owned in 2010...

I only know a couple of owners and haven't heard that. I don't think they can be that high especially if you were to do initial and recurrent training with someone such as SimCon.

I'm in Oregon, so maybe Aerostar Aircraft is my best bet?

Insurance on my Aerostar was lower then on Cirrus, and the Aerostar was worth more. :D
The Aerostar also required annual training, without it the insurance cost was a lot more.

For major MX, annual inspections and prebuy, go to one of the big Aerostar shops; they are scattered all over. However, I would recommend using the local shop for basic oil changes to build a relationship for the eventual AOG issue that affects all planes.

In addition to Don Smith previously mentioned in both categories,

Lester Kyle
Ron Cox
Ralph Stone
Are all highly recommended for Aerostar training...they will travel to you.

The flight Shop in Utah, Master Aviation in CT and of course Aerostar Aircraft Corp. in ID for a pre-buy.

There are others as well but these are the ones that come up most often.

Glen's list of trainers is a good one.

For maintenance, (out West) don't forget the Flight Shop in Brigham City, Utah and Kreuger Aviation in Marysville, CA.

Don Smith at Aerostar World has a 601P he uses for training, if you want to be checked out prior to buying, he is your man.
