My new ride, well a one third share and that's perfect for some summer fun. The Bo is absolutely still primary.

Does yours have any old airship aluminum in it?? Rumor is they were made using scrap from some of the airships. I'd guess it's about 30% larger than a Stearman . Some of the early ones were made from left over airship parts.

Quote: I'd guess it's about 30% larger than a Stearman . Some of the early ones were made from left over airship parts. I own N3N Bu2896 thus I'm a fan and like to bug my Stearman friends with the N3N being bigger, stronger, faster....but I'm not sure I agree with the 30% estimate. Here is my cheet sheet for comparison purposes N3N-3 (Landplane) | Stearman (N2S-3) | Difference Wingspan 34 ft 0 in | 32 ft 2 in | N3N +1 ft 10 in Length 25 ft 6 in | 24 ft 9 in | N3N + 9 in Height 11 ft 4 in | 9 ft 8 in | N3N + 1 ft 8 in Empty Weight 2090 lbs | 1931 lbs | N3N +159 lbs Gross Weight 2800 lbs | 2635 lbs | N3N + 165 lbs Useful Load 710 lbs | 704 | N3N + 6 lbs A good site (where similar info can be found) is: https://notastearman.wordpress.com/

Jim, that is a beautiful airplane…very classic…always admired these.. may I ask, how would you compare the handling ( mainly on the ground) of the N3N-3 with a later basic ( Conti powered) Stearman…? are the comparable? any big differences in handling? thanks and congrats Gerd

The N3N has a locking tail wheel used for take off and landing .

Jim, best of luck with the new plane. Stick your inside the fuselage sometime and check out the construction of that N3N. Not many planes were built like that. BTW, some of the Navy's Stearmans had locking tailwheels too. Mine has the steerable tailwheel. There's a beautiful N3N at a field near me. It's available for rides too. The N3N's were all made here in Philly not too far from where I live, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_Aircraft_Factory.
