It's in for some avionics upgrades right now, because you know - well - me. It is IFR certified, and will soon have dual Aspen Pros, GTN750, JPI-900, and a GTX345R.

You're putting all that in a Champ??!@#

Yeah - I know.

As I say a lot, I want to buy the airplanes I sell... :-)

Seriously, I enjoy having that avionics, for me that is fun, along with the capabilities. Since the icon is pretty much out, I figured I would upgrade this bird, and it needed a few things anyway, so the delta isn't crazy. I bought a 3 tube aspen set and am going to use the remaining in a v35 I just picked up.

so very true...

disagree (politely)...I fly my Husky IFR quite a bit...when the other planes are down, makes a reasonable IFR cross country platform....last December shot 7 or 8 approaches (ILS)in it down to 400-600 ft.

but...I agree that’s not “what they’re meant for...”....but it’s just a bit more utility...

Stan, why did you choose the Husky over the Super Cub, or the Decathlon.......did you look at a Maule at all?

Did you get a chance to fly the Carbon Cub?

I’ve had a Decathlon....(not a Super...) and the short field performance wasn’t what I wanted. I really enjoy going out to short grass strips, and like the ability to “leap” up, and the Decathlon has no flaps. Flaps add a lot to the short/soft utility.

I started looking for a Super Cub...couldn’t find a decent one for under 100K at the time. Found a decent full IFR Husky for 75K...and with the constant speed prop it’s much faster. I still like the flying qualities of the Super Cub better...but not 25K better (if that makes sense...).

The Maule is an incredibly useful plane. However, it has a yoke, not a stick..and my body shape puts me where I can’t see real well because of how the “pillars” at the corner of the windshield come down. I love the view from the Husky/Super Cub. I also like flying with the door down/window up.

Husky and Super Cub seem to hold value better than a Maule (not verified scientifically..YMMV).

If I were you, I’d make a big effort to actually fly everything you are remotely considering....and try to decide what makes *your* heart race....for me, it’s playing “pseudo-bush pilot”. It’s also having a plane that I can give instruction/rides in to interested people, that preps them for a Six or other taildragger. Husky is good for that.

If you have warbird lust, look at the Bird Dog...big, roomy Cessna...you feel like you are flying a “big boy” plane, but it’s as cheap to run as a 170.

Super Cruisers used to be a good deal....but a quick search shows the market discovered that secret.

Ex astronaut Frank Borman lives here in Montana now and flys this aircraft, we just call it a turbine Bird Dog. He had it out today at a fly in near Helena.

got to know Pete Jones of AirRepair very well, when a bunch of folks and I restored and mod'ed a 450 Stearman…

he also is the gentleman to contact for all L-19 Bird Dogs..he also owns and maintains the engine type certificate..

great place to get info for all L-19 stuff..

from time to time a SIAI Marchetti SM1019 shows up for sale…the Italian turbine Bird Dog…but very rarely…seems the lucky few who own one of these do not want to part….
