Do you know what the winds aloft were at that altitude and that day? How can you conclude anything from that? He filed for 230kts but even that doesn't mean anything.

I'd bet Vne is very limiting at anything under fl250

Its the tail. When Cessna went to turbines, they discovered the tail needed to be modified after inflight failure. Its kind of like putting a TN550 on straight Bonanza. Some big advantages and some serious limitations.

The original Cessnas had the straight tail like this plane. Now you'll notice Conquests have a Vshaped horizontal.

A local acquaintance has one and loves it. He takes it to Baja often.

Looking at the ad photos, I don't see any exhaust stacks... ?? They state aux fuel in nacelles so probably doesn't go thru there.. Anyone familiar with this conversion?

You can look up soundings:

http://weather.uwyo.edu/upperair/sounding.html

Winds that day enroute were roughly 330 at 58 (6400 meter elevation, March 4, 2016, 1200Z time, ILN station)

Works out to 244 knots true, roughly.

The exhaust is plainly visible on the sides of the nacelle, just behind the spinner. Typical for P&W PT6.

(Sorry I thought you were talking about the advertisement picture posted, not to the controller link)

There are at least TWO Riley conversions of 421.

One uses the Lycoming LTP-101 engine (this example). Named "Turbine Rocket".

Another uses the PT6 (the advert example). Named "Turbine Eagle".

On the LTP101, the exhaust comes out the rear, on the PT6, dual side exhaust.

Vne is reduced to top of green arc which is severely limiting at lower altitudes. Has nothing to do with the tail, just a side effect of the FAA rules that say turboprops don't have yellow arcs on the airspeed indicator. For this airplane, that means Vne is lowered from 240 to 201 KIAS.

Not a long range airplane. Not a load carrying airplane. Typical max IFR flight will be 2.5 hours. Loaded with fuel (~ 1900 lbs), might be lucky to have 500 lbs useful load left. So the load profile is 500 lbs flown 600 nm.

And it is a unicorn. Not many out there.

Relative to other choices, this is sucky.

Not on this conversion.

See the big pipe sticking out the rear.

Read about the 441 tail controversy when it first came out. Nasty business that grounded the fleet not once, but TWICE. This was a direct result of using a tail good enough for a piston airplane on a turboprop.
