Wasn't this a SF50 thread? So from MU2s, we're now arguing if autopilots are for chumps? These themes seem to endlessly jump from thread to thread. Perhaps the FAA should ban Autpilots all together to improve safety. Forget integrated flight decks, real men should only be allowed to hand fly these...

Most conversations drift, often to common themes. I don't mind that at social gatherings, or on BT. Keeps it interesting. We do have an ignore feature...

Why is that?

Good question....

Cirrus could make a great business selling an SR22/Jet package to 0TT guys. You put your deposit down for the jet and in exchange you get a low time SR22 and an instructor to teach you. In 12 months you get 250 hours and your instrument rating and then you get the Jet with transition training and 6 months of mentoring. I don't think it's going to be a hard sell. If they make the jet accessible to every middle-aged tom, dick and harry sitting on a half million of play money they'll do very well.

That's precisely my hope. Once the MDs (no offense to those MDs that are real pilots, I'm talking about your "buy a 421 and fly it 20 hours a year" bretheren) sell them after the depreciation is all done, I hope there will be a glut of them on the market to keep the prices down. That's pretty much what happened with the SR22.

Well Sean did you ever think you were starting a 220 page thread? How do you feel about the SF50 now?

Peace,
Don

The SF50 would be a better airplane with winglets. Someone will come out with a mod.

The SF50 would be a better airplane with two engines. Someone will come out with a mod. :hide:

The SF50 would be a better airplane if it was a Challenger 300.

Pull out the AP and chute too. Save 100-200lbs. I'm sure there will be a mod.

Winglets are for wimpy jets flown with autopilots

Winglets or tip tanks? After all we are talking about a V tail...

Don

I'll bet Sean doesn't pay much attention to this thread. Like the father of an axe murderer he'd probably rather not think about it...

Any shortcomings that the SF50 seems to have on paper, seems to be forgotten when you see how ergonomically delightful the aircraft is. Going to sell a bunch of these on emotion, which for most owner pilots, is a really big factor.

I am pretty sure I read something about Boeing and Airbus automation choices. In Airbus, each system is separate and will fail separately, with minimal notification or overloaded notification.
Boeing is now offering the airlines a choice. When there is a failure it shuts down all automation, and forces the pilot to re-engage each system separately. The post I saw dealt with auto-throttles, a/p modes, flight envelop protection... The idea behind it was to reduce the amount insidious failure cases. When you have an automation failure, you are now completely manual.

Question I have, which is actually safer? And which is easier to train for? And has any airline made the switch?

Tim

Sean has been occupied with divesting of one business and pursuing another and hasn't been following BT as much as he'd like.

I believe I left it somewhere around page 50, I've got a lot of reading to do.

I think you're right.. It's just Crandall and Ciholas arguing about MU2 vs Pilatus with some KA-200/KA-350 anecdotes thrown in.
