Is there such a thing that's not a money pit or a project?

Older, well maintained Malibu.

So if you move up will there be an essay contest for the Red Bo?

For that money you might be able to get into a Silver Eagle P210 turbine conversion. They're pretty capable planes and the RR250 gas turbine is pretty much as proven as they come (they're in every helicopter ever made, basically), as well as on the cheaper side to maintain.

500 miles or so, 700 tops
Light load: me + 1 pax; occasionally 2 pax
Light luggage: sub 100 lbs
Say 500 lbs, 600 lbs occasionally ; 350 lbs most of the time.
Oh, and I just love the sound and smell of turbines. Not sure if that can be done on this budget and on "human" yearly budget.

For any plane . . . plan what you need . . . figure out what the cost is . . . come up with a number you are willing to spend . . . increase it by 20 percent, and you know what you really have to spend.

For 500 AMU a year you shouldn't have any problem TBM, PC12, small jet... Lots of choices.

Peace,
Don

I'm guessing he means 500 AMU purchase price, not annual budget. I could be wrong.

Before you take a piston powered, booted P210 into moderate icing, do some research on how that combination works. I was not a fan of what I read after my research. Decent airplanes outside of icing, but if FIKI was important, meaning icing performance mattered, I'd strongly prefer TKS or the Silver Eagle conversion (and TKS is better for strictly icing considerations, but the turbine SE brings other benefits, of course...)

If shopping P210s, the Vitatoe engine conversion is a good one.

500K should get you a reasonably clean PA46 Malibu Mirage of a 2000-2002 vintage - maybe newer with some luck. It is also fairly fast and comfortable for what you are looking for.

Anything with a turbine (SETP) for this price range will have lots of catchup costs - ie a money pit.
