Loafing along at FL230 with a 7500ft cabin pressure. Mod turb reports above and below, I was in VFR still air listening to jazz.

Hard to beat the Malibu for efficiency.

Mailbu with 550 is probably the most efficient and best single engine piston in the world. Love it!

I had a sneaking suspicion that this post was about a Malibu.

Agreed. The Malibu is an extremely efficient and wonderful aircraft with a fairly flexible mission profile. My only complaint is it's just missing those big ol' barn doors, but I guess I would trade the doors for pressurization :duck:

The 550 just hums along LOP with cool CHT's to boot.

Anthony, how do you like the GTN-750? I have a friend who has an all original panel in his '84 Malibu and is considering putting in a GTN750. If you wouldn't mind, could you share with me via PM time and costs for install of your upgrade?

Rob

I'll butt in on the 750 question. Undoubtedly the most useful piece on equipment in my Mirage. It makes me look like I know what I am doing even in the NE corridor.

The 750 was in the plane when I purchased. I had planned on putting in a g500 but loved the 750 so much I kept the steam gauges. In my opinion it really lowers the pilot workload.

How long did it take to climb to FL230 and what was the fuel burn to get up there?

I was climbing 800ish fpm at about 140 indicated. Took about 30 min total with some ATC steps. I had a headwind so I was trying to keep my speed up vs the claim rate. I used about 20 gallons in the climb and started the day with 120. I have 140 in total capacity if I fill the outer caps.

I typically climb around 900fpm to 20k the 500 to 700 above that. Plane just seems to like those numbers.

The Malibu and Mirage do things that no other piston single can do.

Just curious: What is your useful load?

Awesome numbers there. The Malibu is a great machine.

1340. I am blessed with a lightweight family who like to pack light. With 140 gallons I am 10lbs below gross with wife, two kids and bags. I could take out a seat and pick up another 18lbs I think.

A 400 hp diesel would be a game changer in this aircraft.

Except fit into the hangars that most of us have access to. Piper really screwed up on that one, it's one case where marketing should have trumped engineering but didn't.

The high aspect ratio wing is the reason the Malibu does what it does. You can't clip its wings and have it be the same.
