Very doable.

Sounds like O32, Reedley.

http://www.airnav.com/airport/O32

There are some overruns at each end, plus farm fields all around, save the road north of the field.

This seems doable in a 421 unless very heavy and/or hot.

If the aircraft isnt VG equipped, who makes the best kit, what's it cost?

Are there any pdf's showing performance with and w/out vg's?

The VG's don't really improve performance. They lower Vmc which adds a safety margin.

Well, to the extent that you are willing to rotate at a speed based on VMC (rather than VYSE) then the VG's might help short field takeoffs. 5 kts lower Vr would make a big difference.

I had the Vg on the P and I believe they served a purpose. I've heard in my discussions that the STOl kit is nice too BUT maintenance is required to maintain.. so just another variable..
Personally it's not a need.

I'm not sure what maintenance would be involved with a stol kit. As I understand it modifies the flap/aileron/etc. I can't imagine what would be consumable or maintainable.

None.

I have the RSTOL in my 182 and it has not been touched in 40 years. Handy for bush work.

I don't know the design, but bearings, tracks, screws, travel nuts, rollers could all need replacement in due course.

Is this likely to be different from a normal set of wings? What's different?

There are a lot more linkages, bell cranks jack screws etc and its a more complicated system to maintain and adjust.

Yes, entirely different. The STOL flap system is an entirely different mechanical design.

A "normal" 421 flap doesn't go down and back:

Yes I understand the wing is physically different but why would it be maintenance intensive? normal flaps etc rarely need work.

Flaps that hinge down are simple. Flaps that run on tracks that run back and down are not and have more moving parts and more wear points. Eventually those parts need to be replaced.

See figure 1 here:

http://www.sijet.com/download/SB_SI09-8 ... v.A6-12-12).pdf

Lots of moving parts!
