Just want to hear some thoughts from guys with 421's about the benefit of VG's in this application? Also how many of you guys are running GAMI injectors ?

Yes. You get a 130lbs gross weight increase and reduce Vmca to below the stall speed in most configurations.

I don't have GAMIs, but not for any particular reason.

If you can run LOP smoothly, you don't need them, and they'll do nothing for you! :D

If you don't run LOP as needed...

George and Walter were going somewhere in a 421 (I think) one day, and had cruise power set at 35", LOP, high RPM, and it was as smooth as a baby's bottom, and going like stink. One looked at the other and sighed with pleasure, "You know, this is the way God and Carl Goulet intended for these engines to operate."

John,

I've been a user/believe in LOP for a long time and actually fine tune my injectors to the point that I can run my TAT TN V35B. About 250 degrees LOP on at 2500rpm. It doesn't stumble when I go too far , it quits!!!... Even if I run ROP on the GTSIO motor, wouldn't dialing in the spread help with temp and efficiency?

Mine has totally stock engine instrumentation/injectors and runs nicely LOP though I haven't tried it above 60% power or so.

Mine lacks VGs as well. Can't speak to the low speed handling benefits but I doubt I would make use of the GW increase. SE performance at factory GW (7450) stinks bad enough.

Wouldn't it help with SE performance at 7450 also and make it not as challenging ?

Sure! But if someone isn't interested in LOP at all, he's not likely to be interested in a gallon or two an hour ROP.

I don't think VGs help SE ROC so much as low speed handling, but I'm not very knowledgable. Even then for the investment it's a decent return and you get to advertise a higher useful load at resale.

What's 2AMU in the big picture.... Ordering some GAMI's and will drive John Paul and George crazy as I dial these motors in....

I have VG's but have never flown one without so I cannot give a point of reference.

I did have GAMI's installed at engine rebuilds but have not taken the time to dial them in yet.

Dont think I would add GAMI's again, when I first got the plane I swapped the factory injectors around untill I got a nice steady reading across all cylinders. This works as good GAMI's I would bet.

Steve, if you're talking about the EGTs being the same, you're not on the right track. EGTs can be, and almost always are UNEVEN. What we're really looking for is the FUEL FLOW at which each cylinder PEAKs on the EGT.

The GAMI Lean Test has you move the mixture knob VERY, VERY SLOWLY, and recording the FUEL FLOW as each peaks. If the last one is within 0.5 GPH of the first, THEN you're good.
