Bill - Thanks for the follow up. You don't owe anyone an explanation but they do possibly help the next guy down the line avoid a needless expensive part change. I'll bet that if Mike Busch were consulted on this he would have requested the same approach.

Did yall miss the part where he decided to trouble shoot a bit more AFTER calling the tech rep? Had he done the job right to begin with, there would be no claim of saving the customer $2000. Fortunately for the customer, either way works I suppose.

1. Customer called me telling me he had a low volt on when he shouldn't.
2. Customer sent me photos of said problem in flight.
3. I sent photos to tech rep.
3. (A) Went to restroom.
4. Tech rep stated power diode probably bad, change the MCU.
4. (I) Checked availability and pricing of replacement MCU.
5. Customer finally got me the plane to look at.
6. Performed MCU operational checkout.
6. (a) went to lunch
7. Decowled aircraft.
8. Removed MCU cover.
9. Checked all accessible fuses.
10. Removed circuit board to check the 50 & 125 amp midi fuses, noted both 50s inop.
11. Printed out wire diagram for reference.
12. Printed out Fuse replacement procedure
13. Ordered fuses
14. Replaced alleged bad tempered fuses, performed resistance checks on newly installed fuses.
15. Reinstalled MCU cover.
16. Recowled engine.
17. Performed MCU operational checkout, checked good.
18. Completed logbook entries for maintenance performed.
19. Went home and slept well.

When a motor is running, that is true. When it can't turn, it pulls a lot more. Usually resulting in a release of smoke and burnt coils, if it doesn't pop a breaker or blow a fuse first.

I was wondering if the fuses are contained in the MCU. Do the replacement MCU's come with new fuses or do you reuse the ones from the suspected failed unit? If you had just replaced the MCU with the available repaired one (probably tagged "No Fault Found" from the last remove and replace artist) you would have replaced the entire assembly, including fuses, done a successful ops check IAW the AMM, charged the owner $2100 and slept even better knowing the house payment was made for the month. You could also have avoided all of this controversy. :duck:

Yes the replacement MCU comes with the fuses.

You do realize the $2100 us not all profit.

What fun is there to avouding contraversy?

So, the real lesson learned in all of this is to methodically list out our troubleshooting steps during inspection and repair so that someone's panties don't get wadded up?

Countless times I have enquired to the poster of Q's or A's what they are thinking or where they are coming from... VIA P.M. Sometimes the answers are pretty damn entertaining...a while back, one dude sent me his C. V.; I was dumbfounded, and you know what? He still didn't answer the question...

There is a reason I use the term specialist instead of expert: I know I don't know everything; the day I think I do should be the day I retire.
