Had some free time so watched this YouTube video about Trumps 757... A question came to mind which hopefully someone can answer.... In the video, it mentions that TSA has some security requirements about sharp stuff on planes. Also shows a metal detector. If you have your own private plane, whether it is Cessna 152 or Boeing 747, why the metal detector or TSA requirements? The metal detector... Is it an airport specific thing? I know here in Ft a Lauderdale, I've seen global express jets that the passengers do not have to go thru security, so then The TSA requirements seem weird... A little confused here.... Hopefully someone can answer

At some weight you have to operate 121. No part 91 allowed. Suspect that is what gets you. Gulf streams don't have that.

That's a new one to me. Can you point a reference?

I had to go through a metal detector and put my bag through an x-ray machine at Signature at BOS last month AND those greedy bastards charged me $58.80 for it! Dont pay any attention to the blueberry... I didnt have a napkin and couldnt think of a better way to use a receipt with insane charges on it. That was for five days of parking without buying any of their almost $9/gallon fuel. I asked if they could wave the fees if I bought a bunch of fuel, but was told that it makes no difference and no fees are wavable.

:bugeye: If FBOs can get away with that, general aviation deserves to die. What on earth could possibly make it worth landing there?

Wow Stewart, those FBO charges are just plane crazy. Aspen is now a bargain in my mind.

My understanding of the Logan fees is that they are an intentional disincentive to GA.

I was told when I went to Signature BOS last month that the need for the metal detector (and associated $59 fee) was due to the proximity to the airline terminal. I don't believe that but that is what the local TSA required apparently. That said, I loved the convenience of BOS since I had a wedding downtown. They set up a car service both ways for me and it was incredibly easy and convenient. 10 minutes each way to/from the airport and hotel.

Massport, the State port authority, and its affiliated FBOs has little to no need for our kind of GA nor have they going back 20 years. They control BOS, BED and ORH ( Worcester). I remember attending a hearing at BOS to fight a exponential landing fee increase that was held about 20 years ago....even the Better Business Bureau was against it. The local politicos at that time under the auspices of Governor Dukakis were pretty transparent in their beliefs and all but said, "they can afford it". Paradoxically, we now have two of the three airports flooded with private jets and very few 100ll burners. The paradox? The increase in fees would seem to have attracted ultra wealth while killing middle class usage of the airport. The third airport, Worcester, is almost dead ....again.

What I don't get on that invoice is the handling fee.....wow! Where was the value proposition in that?

KTYS floated the idea of requiring everyone to go through a metal detector before going onto the ramp. The commercial terminal with their 10 flights a day is on the far side of the airport divided with a fence. The bottom line is if the airport security wants to do this crap they can. Welcome to the USSA--papers please!

Trying to think through this. What would they do if you are intentionally carrying a firearm in your plane. X-ray it. Confirm that's what it is , and send you on your way ? I sort of get the crewed 757 argument, but when you are the pilot in command, you determine what goes on your plane. Even cites with the most restrictive gun laws (at least the ones I have read) allow you to carry a cased firearm in your vehicle on the way to/from target practice. So, what would be the legal basis for not allowing you to take a firearm on your personal plane ? The even more bizarre corner case would be if you are also the sole occupant ? Hard to be PIC if you don't "take control of the plane."
