Can someone who flies a non-RVSM jet answer the question. In the boonies will controllers clear you above RVSM altitudes in a non-RVSM plane? I'm not expecting this treatment cruising through NYC airspace, I'm talking places like over the gulf, Texas, NC, stuff like that?
Mike Unlikely. First non-RVSM altitude is FL430 and I believe a Citation 500 max altitude is FL410 and it will struggle to get up there in many flight conditions. If you get a non-RVSM Citation plan to be bumping around in the weather with the turboprops at FL280 and below. Plan your range accordingly.

Did i read it right i would need 500 hours turbine to fly it single pilot?
Mike Yup. Typical single pilot wavier requirements are: Pilot Requirements:
1st or 2nd class Medical
Have ATP or Commercial certificate
CE-500 type rating
At least 1000 hours total time
50 hours of night flight
75 hours instrument (40 actual)
500 hours as PIC or SIC in turbine powered airplanes

Mike It's very unlikely. I have been cleared into RVSM airspace in a non-RVSM aircraft a couple times, but it required prior arrangements once and being very convincing the other.

I know 4 guys who are SP and didn't meet those requirements. Did it in the plane, got 100 hours with a mentor after and attend recurrent.
What's the story there? If you wanna pay to play- it just works or what?

4 guys SP in what specific aircraft? This thread is discussing the Citation 500. That what your friends are flying? Early model Citations were not certfied for SP and need pilot exemptions.

501/551
501/551 is SP certified with just a type rating. Different situation then 500/550 which was certified for 2 crew only.
