A friend of mine bought a beautiful Cessna 195. He's still getting "use" to it, and today, another friend and very accomplished 195 pilot and mechanic was over helping him adjust the toe-in on the main landing gear.
After the gear adjustment, the owner suggested that I shoot some landings with the 195 guy and get comfortable with it. He wants me to be current just in case the airplane needs a second pilot.
I shot 6 takeoffs and landings. Really a nice flying old bird. A couple of peculiarities in pitch for both take off and landing, but nothing that another 10 circuits won't cure.
On takeoff, the tail comes up when it wants to. On landing, it comes down when it wants to. Tried to put the tail down after a wheel landing and she wanted to fly again. That's a really big wing and lots of lift.
It's amazing but this airplane could actually be a reliable cross country IFR platform if you wanted. Stable as a rock and really light on the controls. Sixty years old and still a reliable means of transportation.

Craig, You know too much!!! :bigeye:, but you're right, I was flying with the famous, infamous, Aubey Pearman. Thank goodness he's not on BT, there would never be any peace. The character of characters, pilot of pilots, mechanic extraordinaire. I'll tell you one thing, if you want an "unusual" airplane, he's the man. I'll take some pics of the 195 and post in a couple of days. Jgreen

John,
I almost bought one before our search changed from the 195 to the Bonanza... We were looking hard - I had the opportunity to fly one and yes, met the 195 crown at KOSH... Neat flying airplane, but as we learned more and more, it didn't fit a couple of our needs and found the Bo did and did well. We also had a lot of concern about finding a "good one", especially not being close to any of the 195 guru's. Ramp presence of the 195 can't be beat though, round motor, attitude, very nice lines...
Does the one you'll be flying have the castering mains or not? Reminded me of the pointy nose airplanes - land it in a crab - those wheels will straighten out. It works, but not sure I'd trust it 100% every time. Great built airplane - only like 3 AD's in its entire history, but lots out there with broken gear boxes, etc... Have fun and can't wait to see the pics!
Happy Flyin'!
Andy

The one I am flying does not have castering gear. They are having some issues with getting the toe in/ toe out just right and it does some strange things right after touch down.
I was dubious about the catering gear until I owned a Helio Courier with one; worked flawlessly, much to my surprise.
The fellow that flew with me advised landing it like a Twin Beech, one main at at time. The biggest problem I had was figuring out when the airplane was straight down the runway. You can lean your head to the left and see around the nose, a little, but the nose tapers and figuring out what is straight was a challenge.

The 195 is a wonderful airplane but just too costly to maintain and fly. It is one of the airplanes on my dream list, but then so is a Boeing 747SP on retractable wheel floats.

And they are fun to play in....... Fello BT'er Charles Perry in a friends 195. He left the keys here so it could be kept flying while he was away. So we obliged...under sufferance of course. We cant have clocked up any more than 25 hours on it
