Ted,

I will not talk you out of it! Sounds like a whole lot of fun. You've flown the plane, you know whether you can afford it, and I'm sure you understand its inherent risks. Go for it!

The alternative is to sell everything that moves faster than 15 mph, get in bed and pull the covers over your head.
As my daddy used to say: If you eat properly, don't drink or smoke or stay up late and avoid carousing with fast women; you may not live longer, but it will sure seem like it!

If I bought one that had hot seats, the first thing I would do is deactivate them.

David- I will take you up on your offer. PM coming your way. Thanks!

If you get bored with flying your jet already, why don't you buy an Extra 300 and get some good aerobatic instruction ?

Last time I said something critical about the L39, I got verbally beat up by someone who has a commercial interest in selling them. Be very careful about anyone you are dealing with when it comes to that class of aircraft, each of them has an agenda, and it rarely coincides with your interests.

A Great Source of information on L 39s is Randy Howell head of the Patriots Jets demonstration team. He imported, and rebuilt all of the seven team jets. Super nice guy. Google Patriot jet team.

If I'm going to kill myself in a fighter trainer, I'll be going supersonic in a T-38 Talon by God !

Here is the bad news, a lot of the L39s out there have not been maintained properly. You need to find one that has been serviced by International Jets, Arlington Jet Center, Vladie at Thermal Airport or Alby at Reno Stead.

I live in Athens, AL and while I will never be able to afford one of these jets the fact that excellent service is available right down the road in Gadsden would be a huge factor to me if I was ever in a position to buy one of these toys.

I had a TS-11 Iskra. It did not have the takeoff performance the L39 did, but otherwise it has nearly the same performance. It was fun for about 50 hours and after that is just burned 150 GPH doing nothing. I had one that did not require a letter to the FAA for leaving your home area and this was before RVSM as well. I flew it a few times over 30K. It was fun for awhile and then was just a liability.

This was the only plane I ever lost money on.

Would not do it again.
