I had the first cub crafter service center and got the chance to fly a carbon cub. It's a kick butt plane to fly. The only cooler plane I have flown are the Extra 300s.

I've flown a fair number of airplanes (sadly, not the Extra 300), but my Cub is the best. I was out this afternoon puttering around in it over St. George Island, Dog Island...etc. I was so tempted to drop on the beach (abandoned) and go exploring. I need to go walk the beaches first, tho.

Or get floats...which really call me.

But it works pretty good just as it is! And my wife (in one flight) and a neighbor (another flight) agree.

The CC seems to me to be a screaming opportunity for the FAA to do something to promote aviation. Why not have a dual certificate? Some Cessnas are permitted at utility weights to do some things and not permitted at normal weights. Why not a dual certificate for the CC:
At full up weights, like the 1750 or so mentioned here, use as a normal category aircraft is permitted, has to be flown by a PP or better, can use the full 180 w/o limit etc etc; at LSA weights, 1320 and below, can be flown as an LSA with all the attendant limits. Same plane, dual cert. Seems to me that would make one plane much more useful, grandpa could fly my plane as an LSA and I can fly it normal category etc. Why not?

Richard: Complements on a brilliant idea. There is more...since CubCrafters builds SuperCubs in the same facility, they are required to build the Carbon Cub to part 123 standards (they can't use two standards). So, as opposed to most Light Sport operations (not trying to insult other Light Sport airplanes, just stating facts) it would be trivial to continue production as a cerified airplane. I don't know how difficult (expensive) it would be to get the certification.

There have been rumors going around the Carbon Cub community suggesting that there is an active effort to explore just what you suggest. But they are just rumors :shrug: . The guys at CubCrafters are very closed mouth about their plans in that direction. I got to walk through their "skunkworks" when I got the factory tour, and they said nuttin'.

I wouldn't hate having my gross weight up around 1700 pounds!

By the way...as far as the power limits go, that really isn't an issue. Turns out that MPH/gallons of fuel ratio works out to being pretty good at lower power settings. Cranking the power up makes a helluva lot more noise, but doesn't gain a helluva lot more speed. And of course, uses a helluva lot more gas.

I've got the 26's. As light as the airplane is, probably not a problem. On the other hand, with amphib floats (~25AMU's), I'd have the best of all worlds, I think. Couldn't land on the beach, per se, but surely could land right next to it. There's a guy in the CC community who flys his with floats all summer long. He takes it down to the bahamas a lot. Interestingly, he bought a new one (because he could) and the CC people took his old one and tore it down completely to evaluate what 4 years of flying floats on salt water did to it. Answer was...nothing. No corrosion at all. And when these guys look...they look hard.

As the consulting stuff takes off (and its starting)...well, and after my wife gets her (ok, our) swimming pool/hot tub, I'm gonna take a hard look at floats.

really enjoy how the excellent folks at Cubcrafters have the developed the "Cub Theme" over all those years...and they always have know a thing or two about Cubs...have bought a lot of their PA18 STCs and they all worked without a hitch..

and those new Sportcubs and Carboncubs...well does not get any better than that..
