An airplane that was certificated without a transponder should never need one in Class D, E, or G airspace. Or at least, that was the upshot of the research I did when I had an electrified J-3.

I'd like to find out that you're correct Stuart but what I found agree's with Tom's understanding. If it's got an electrical system, you need a transponder. There may be some wiggle room about what an electrical system is. A cub with a battery and a starter but no alternator, lights or radios might not cross the threshold. I've seen several cubs set up like that. I even got checked out in one many years ago. Good question!! Hi All,
Snow in the northeast prevented the Cub from being flown to a prebuy today, so I’ve got to wait a few more days. As soon as the move is made and I can take some photos, I’ll post them here!

Thanks Bob. I'll give them a call next week.
Cheers.

Is there anyone on BT that doesn’t currently own or has owned a Cub. All, including myself, have opinions about them. Yes, the 100, 90, 85, 75 all have their differing qualities and enough power to help you out of most situations. But a stock 65 hp. or 45 hp. will teach the stick and rudder skills that make for good pilots. Nothin like that feelin you get in the seat of your pants, if you know what I mean. How many have experienced a Cub at 8,000 ft. or higher? You feel mighty small and kinda like a kite. I’ve been fortunate to have rebuilt and flown several Cubs. They are all great airplanes. Watch out for rust in the longerons and tail post areas! Have fun, your wife will love it after 2 evening rides!

Hi All, Weather and schedules have slowed this project down a bit, but things are now nearly wrapped up with my acquisition of a 1946 Piper J-3 Cub. I snapped a couple of photos tonight in the hangar. My mechanic says this is Cub is a "9", so I'm pretty happy overall with the plane itself, and the price. Heading to Florida in a few weeks to learn to fly it with Preston Aviation in Winter Haven. Attachment: IMG_2683.JPG Attachment: IMG_2686.JPG Attachment: IMG_2688.JPG

My 18 year old daughter got her tailwheel endorsement yesterday in our Super Legend Cub. She is very excited to fly a real airplane after flying a 172 for so long.
You are in for a great adventure with the J3. There is no better mental therapy.

You are in for a great adventure with the J3. There is no better mental therapy. I taught my son, John, to fly our Cub when he was eleven. He flew his first 172 when he was 14, and I still remember his exclamation at this first 172 landing. "Boy, this sure is easy to fly." Jg

Hi All, I've been picking away at 'Cub projects' this winter while waiting for better weather this spring to fly my new Cub. I've been detailing the plane, installing an intercom, and resolving a few minor mechanical issues found during the pre-buy. Every time I go to the hangar, my trusty canine 'helper' Sandy comes along to keep me company. She loves to just sit in the back seat and watch all the action! Attachment: SandyinCub.jpg

That's great!! My little Westie used to like to hop up on the horizontal stabilizer on my Chipmunk to keep an eye on me. He scuffed up the elevator a few times too but we both knew who was in charge.
