Cool. Looks like fun.

Essentially just launching a cruise missile with a pilot in the front.

Eisenhower’s interstate and defense highway system?

I have always thought that the F100 was the most beautiful of any of the jet fighters just as the 707-300 fan engine airliners were the most beautiful jet airliners ever built.

I know there are a few B36TC owners who will want this. Sure solves the high, hot, near gross take off ground run issues.

Actually not to far off the hair brained idea I want to whisper into Elon Musk's ear. Reintroduce catapult launches for commercial aircraft, electric solar powered of course.
Just a system that sits behind the aircraft main wheels, accelerates aircraft through all those critical low end V speeds. Gets aircraft to altitude quick for safety and noise abatement and a considerable first segment fuel burn savings. Yes, Elon I do have an idea for the abort system as well. Make it hybrid, land on a conveyor belt to re-gen the energy for take off catapult system. Very green, other than the soiled seats when you hit the throttle yeeeeeehaw.

Eisenhower’s interstate and defense highway system?

The system was intended to launch fighters armed with tactical nukes in places like Europe and Korea. The idea was that, during periods of heightened tensions, the fighters would be loaded on the trailers and deployed into the woods so one nuke couldn’t take out a whole airbase full of fighters. Given that system was designed for nuclear war, finding a runway was probably the least of the pilots’ problems.

They also launched F-84s and, I think, a few F-104s during the testing.

Stirs memories of my friend, Ron Clements, Hun driver(f111, f15 too, AIR). Survived a wing coming off over North Sea in the early F100 days. RIP, he was always jazzed about elk season.

One of my favorite airplanes as a kid. I built a couple models of it.
