Went to Poplar Grove on Saturday to fetch this one and send it on its way to Texas. Built by Boeing in 1943, it trained Navy pilots in Illinois during the war, dusted crops in California for 30 years, and ended up as a basket case in Pete Jones' hangar where it was restored in 1989. Continental 220 engine overhauled as of 2012. MT wood prop. Two wings. Two sticks. Two sets of very necessary rudder pedals. And, in a bow to modernity, a radio/transponder setup by the pilot's right hip. It is as pretty as a speckled puppy. I owe a huge debt to Robbie Vajdos who was patient with my newbie questions and agreed (amazingly) to accompany me to Poplar Grove, perform a pre-buy, and ferry it home in the cold weather and headwinds last weekend. He is the Stearman guru - if you're in the market he's the guy to call. The plane is at his shop now getting the stock brakes replaced with Redlines and then it'll be in DFW just in time for winter...ha. Also need to say a big THANK YOU to our very own Chester. My plane is down for annual and he was kind enough to let an unreformed Baron pilot borrow Trixie on Saturday to make the run to Illinios and back. This is a feat of character and faith not often seen! Aside from managing the temps as we broke through the sound barrier (Chester was kind enough to show me the 'trick'), I found flying Trixie The World's Fastest Bonanza to be fairly straightforward. Robbie and I rocketed to northern IL and I rocketed home all in one day. If Chester could figure out how to add another set of engine controls, she'd be just perfect! If you need me on most Saturday mornings, DFW folks, I'll be the guy at Hicks eating pancakes and staring happily at the Stearman on the ramp...
