Oh, actually I see the HSI needle swung around so I guess you chose Rwy 3. Hmmm....

Just coupled the Visual in my Dad’s Bonanza. GTN750/G500/KFC200

Used heading mode to intercept, armed approach mode. It coupled the localizer and the GS perfectly.

If you are coupled to the ILS how does the new "visual" feature interact with it? ie is there something to couple to when there is no ILS or LPV with this new feature?

That new visual approach feature on the 750 seems like nothin but trouble.

I assume you chose the visual to 21?

If so, it looks like you were off to the right of the extended centerline, was the 750 going to turn you left to intercept the centerline?

So what did you end up doing, just flying it in visually without using the vis appch on the 750?

Kind of seems like it's more trouble that it's worth?

Look at the cdi. Set up for 3. As programmed

Yeah, figured that out.

So the problem came from you being north of the airport and activating the vis to Rwy 3...

When we played with this the other day I realized it essentially is vectors to final...

That wouldn't work to well from north of the airport either

Bottom line is a don’t know how to use it or it’s not working correctly. I thought it would fly me to the visual waypoint 3 miles out.

Like I said, my read is it ends up looking like a vectors to final instrument approach.

I think to make it practical you need to put two way points in before the visual approach, one 3 miles out and a couple miles off to the side from the extended final and another one on the extended final about 3 miles from the airport.

Kind of a mini T style rnav approach

Maybe with roll steering a single waypoint 3 miles out would be enough

Update on Bonanza. Vertical guidance available at KPAN, but unavailable at KHII.

Gs was flagged at KSDL as well. GFF. McDowell’s? If so why the disclaimers about 3 deg glide path?

Makes me think it should work.

Btw this was a real honest to goodness wtf. The reason doesn’t really matter. It’s what you do about it when it happens. And if you are SP doing 8 miles a minute and have had your head down and aren’t familiar the area don’t think the AP disconnect is a no brainer.

In this case I knew where I was or at least that altitude-wise I wasn’t going to hit anything. So I had that going for me.

I've certainly had enough wtf moments where a quick shift to some other plan was needed to keep things from going bad. [My lack of appreciation for the nuance's of] my friend's new full glass panel has produced an excess of surprises leaving me with a greatly increased appreciation of my steam gauges with moving map augmention.

PS maybe 250 below 10 isn't all bad?

Hmm...

Not sure I'd fly an arrival with waypoints named SHOCK, BUSTD, and YOLOW. That sounds like trouble right from the start.

Just tried doing the visual approach to KSDL Rwy 21 on the 750 simulator, I hadn't spent any time with it before. Did just what Marks plane did when north of the airport -- left turn to 079 for a 45 degree intercept of the final appch course. That sure wouldn't work. Sort of surprised there isn't some level of logic that won't permit that from a position where the 45 degree intercept won't merge with final outside the three mile fix that I believe is used for glideslope intercept.

What does work well is inserting a waypoint before the visual approach that is outside of the three mile fix on final, could be a couple miles outside and to the side of final (more outside than offset from to ensure intercept outside 3 miles) that you're on or could just be outside but if you're traveling fast (8 miles a minute? :bugeye: ), watch out for that big sweeping turn!

Navigate to that waypoint and the flight plan will sequence to the visual, intercept final and should normally provide a glideslope though I didn't verify that on this experiment.

Thanks for the impetus to figure out how this thing works Mark, it's very tempting to "be a man" and not read the directions. And good that you have good SA, were familiar with the area and quick to recognize the unintended action.
