The KA is down for a bit getting engines - ouch, expensive!

I worked out a lease agreement for my hangar neighbor's 1978 C421. My insurance is going to let me fly it with an IPC instead of school and so it looks like I can still fly a trip for my 50th (coming soon!).

I'm looking forward to being able to chime-in on the 421 comparison threads and also seeing what it is like to move from flying turbine to a piston.

I've scheduled a number of days with a local 421 expert but I'd like to start studying early (tonight if possible). I'm wondering if any BT'ers have a electronic copy of a POH. It doesn't have to be a perfect match, I'm just trying to learn the basics.

Thanks so much! I'll report back on how it goes.

Guessing you ran those P&W to TBO faster than planned?

Thanks everyone. Jesse got one to me.

Yes Mark, I put almost 200 hours on the KA in six months. It's faster so you'd think I'd fly less but it's so capable I fly more. I could do hots on the engines but it's looking like that will be expensive and won't necessarily add value to the airplane. Might just bite the bullet and upgrade to BH's.

^^^ for anyone thinking "it's faster so I will fly less" as part of justifying a turbine acquisition. Total BS as John documents.

Depends on mission.
When I jumped from a Cirrus SR20 to the Aerostar for the first year my mission was basically the same. My flying time was basically cut in half (250 hours a year down to 130).

Tim, maybe but I'd argue that a step to a turbine changes the paradigm more than the single piston to twin piston (I did the same when I moved from a v35tc to a p baron). It sounds bad but there really are very few no-go days. I've still delayed a few hours but never cancelled. It is also more reliable, it just doesn't break between major inspections. These two things combined with big cabin class comfort and an attitude of wanting to share a lifelong fantasy with as many friends as possible created a lot of new missions.

Tim:

There are always exceptions but like John has experienced I flew twice what I did the prior year moving up to the AC90. So much faster meant you could go so many more places. As John points out weather almost never scrubs a mission.

When I purchased my first AC90 at Eagle Creek I told the owner Matt Hagans that I would fly less given it was 130 knots faster. He chuckled and said "you will fly twice as much....everybody does. Talk to me in a year". He was right.

But certainly there are exceptions.

Mark, John,

My point was it comes down to mission.
I was going a largely set distance to specific locations, which did not change when I went faster.
