I always enjoy airplanes for sale that I don't understand. Either priced much above or much below what I expect. That generally means there's a chance for me to learn something.

Here's one:
http://www.controller.com/listingsdetai ... 292947.htm

Two new engines, I get that. But otherwise it's a 53 year old airplane with 33 year old avionics. Am I missing something?

Nope. Seller is looking for the greater fool. Sometimes he's out there.

Not much to learn there. Wait a couple of years and buy it for 50K.

Charles, you're not missing a thing - I saw that 680F ad and thought to myself that there must be something very special in the Kool-Aid in some parts of the country!

He will be lucky to get anything close to $100k IMHO.

Yeah, I wonder if it's a typo. You can get a nice 421C for $350K. Or a newer pressurized piston commander.

http://www.controller.com/listingsdetai ... 174686.htm

has been for sale something like 3 years at $200. New engines and (chelton) glass panel.

Didn't realize how much horsepower these had old birds had. What kind of speed with 380 a side for one of these?

About the same hp as a 421 or duke. Probably 220 kts or so.

The later ones had 435 per side and 100 gph total fuel flow on takeoff!

The 680F is a 190kt TAS cruiser at 10,000 feet. The IGSO-540 engines are not the most robust power plants to come out of the Lycoming factory - 1200 hour TBO with a reputation for an even shorter life in the real world. It's the same engine as Beech used on Queen Air 80's.... The ones in the Commander use Simmonds fuel injection so Central Cylinder is about the only game in town if something goes south. If you have to ask about fuel consumption you probably should look elsewhere. Sure is a good looking airplane though!
