Insurance guy: so tell me again what you were doing just before you got the skater.
FAA guy: So, how high up in the air was this skater that you hit?

Luc, Russell,

You guys have drunk to much of the nanny state Kool Aid. :D
In reality, how high is the main rotor? Is that a danger of hitting anyone?
As for the tail rotor, look how far apart those skaters are from the helicopter. I wonder how fast a person would have to be skating toward the helicopter and perfectly timed to get close to the tail boom. I am also somewhat willing to bet they heard him coming.

Can you say the pilot was an idiot, very likely. Especially if not briefed extensively ahead of time with the skaters and planned out. But as for regs and insurance. Let boys be boys.

Tim

Tim, I respect your point of view, but I disagree. A little hoonage goes a long way, and this is more than a little.

With their adrenalin running from being nearly killed combined with being really pissed off, I am surprised none of them threw their sticks at him as he swooped back down over them. Put a few of those through the rotor and karma would have prevailed.

doubt this was not staged/planned. also the forward speed of the helicopter, along the ice, was probably not as fast as the skid mounted camera made it seem

My understanding is the skaters were his buddies, all planned, no real danger. Agreed on on the nanny state comment - I think we should all surrender our pilots licenses and only go on virtual flights - that way no one can get hurt... - oh crap, too many .... must be my carpal tunnel acting up - I think we need some new Govt. oversight to protect me from hurting myself while typing.

I don't think we need any more regs.I think we need a lot less.
If this was planned,good sport.No harm-no foul
If it wasn't,just a good ass whipping would fix it.

As a professional helicopter pilot I see the whole thing as wreckless. From skidding along the ice to the proximity of the skaters. No excuse.

Is it possible that the film was sped up?

Extremely stupid!!! There are only a few pro helicopter pilots here. Being one of them I can tell you this is way past just having fun. In a helicopter when something goes wrong, it goes wrong way faster than in an airplane. Helicopters give pilots the ability to do really stupid things. That is why a 400k R44 cost 17k a year to insure.
