Have these guys never heard of Skynet?

Every time I see research like this I think two things: "Wow, that's incredible," and "Why are they inventing everything the Terminator movies warned us about?"

When are they going to scale these things up so we can have a new form of personal transportation?

Technically this is about as far removed from "Skynet" as the autopilot in your airplane. All they are demonstrating is a combination of positional feedback (e.g. GPS with better resolution), attitude feedback (attitude gyro), and motion prediction fed to multiple actuators (servos). It's still impressive though.

If the quadcopters autonomously decided to learn how to toss and catch sticks on their own we'd be getting closer to Skynet.

Old hat. Dick Tracy had that, only with magnetic levitation instead of noisy props, in the 50's and 60's.

Says the guy who so ardently supported robotic, automated manufacturing technology in the other thread?
