Very poignant. A good read and a good reminder.

It amazes me how young those guys were and what they did.

I am always amazed at how staggering the odds against survival were, and they knew it, and yet they got up every day and went at it.

Can you imagine today's average teenager's response (current military members obviously excepted)

Commander: "Okay, men, there's a wave of Chinese bombers heading our way, we're going to intercept them"

Draftee: "Dude, whatevs, that's insane, besides we'll miss the Kardashians and I can't get wifi up there to tweet "

Dude,
That comment couldn't be farther from the truth, and is in very poor taste.

What a great article. Certainly makes you feel like you're right there. We tend to think of all the glitz and glamour of being a fighter pilot but forget the sheer terror that went along with it as well. These guys won't be with us much longer, so take the time to talk as many and you can now and thank them...

A great read! And to think he was flying the P51 in combat at 5ft 6in and 125 lbs.

These were great men and women. I just keep thinking of how much this country lost in human capital through that damn war. A lot of positive things happened for us because of WWII, but we paid for it dearly!

He mentions the change from defense to offense when Doolittle took over. That was a contentious change; the bomber pilots were strongly against but of course the fighter pilots were eager to take on the Germans in an offensive role.

I believe the statistics did show that the change actually reduced the number of bomber casualties.
