I've grown pretty fond of the Great Lakes, and note that it makes friends everywhere it goes.
Even though I miss the scalpel-sharp handling of my Pitts, I find the GL to be quite capable up to the IAC Sportsman sequence, and can even be made to nibble at Intermediate. A great benefit is the cockpit heater, so acro in the wintertime is actually doable. A friend in a GL totally dominated the Advanced field a couple of years ago in his GL, which was a great demonstration of airmanship and energy management.
For my passengers on discovery flights, who are fascinated by the open-cockpit experience, (enhanced with music like "Out of Africa" on the intercom), I offer a bottle of the "Biplano Rosso" Chianti, made by a good friend in Italy.

Every real aviator needs a biplane.

TN

PS: I really must thank the BT site for allowing me to lay the wine bottle on its side, so the cork stays moist. If it could only rotate it for me, it would be even more awesome.

Hi Tom - cheers on the wine and wonderful post. The part I like the most is “Every real aviator needs a biplane”.

Closed on my Waco and will pick it up in August - ADSB is being installed as well as a smoke system. I figured I couldn’t own a Waco without the ability to paint lines in the sky.

Hola, Alex:

Congratulations on the purchase of your Waco; the BT society will be looking forward to pictures.

I have a bottle of the "Biplano Rosso" Chianti reserved for you, and I hope that it will not be long before we meet, and share stories about biplanes, and my 180, which runs in our families.

Best,

Dr. Cap. P.A. Tomás Návar V.

7.5 hours to Galesburg for the fiftieth Stearman fly-in. Gaggled up over two days like a herd of turtles in the company of a bunch of wild hog outlaws from the great state of Texas (eight of us to be exact, scattered over seven Stearmans). Two Continental stockers, two 450s, two Lycoming 300’s and my happy Jake, which won the efficiency award on leg after leg after leg. Headwinds coming and even worse headwinds forecast for the ride home. Tired butts but loving the good fellowship and the chance to spend a few days around 140+ Stearmans and the common brotherhood of this crazy avocation.

Howard Kirker has countless Intermediate first place trophies in his Great Lakes. It's always a delight to see what a grassroots airplane can do in the hands of a highly skilled pilot. IIRC there was a California contest recently where 4 Great Lakes were competing.

To help save a bit on the cost of keeping a W670 running, I buy 25W-60 oil in 2.5 gallon jugs. Getting oil from a 2.5 gallon jug into the nearly horizontal oil tank filler neck on a Stearman is a challenge if I'm alone. What to do? Old tech to the rescue. I saw an old oil filler with hinged spout online so I bought it. The hinged spout was stuck but it was soon freed up with a bit of penetrating oil. I cleaned up the inside of it and tried it out yesterday - painless and no mess.

9.5 hours of Stearman time yesterday getting home. Departed Galesburg at just before 7:30 AM and shut the barn door in Texas at just after 6:30pm. Headwinds early, so we stayed barnstormer low over the farm fields and river valleys of southern Illinois and Missouri. Crossed the Mississippi at Mark Twain’s hometown and ran the ridges and reservoirs over the eastern edge of the Ozarks like a running covey of quail. An incredible day of flying and priceless memories with a bunch of fun dudes and a gaggle of old loud windy biplanes.

You can fly a kerosene burner, or you can fly a piston something, or you can fly a rotorcraft.
But when you fly a biplane, your chances of getting lucky are greatly improved...

Every real aviator flies a biplane.

I think I saw you in western MO, about 20 SE of Butler, MO. Sunday the 12th the wife and I were in the country and saw a flight of two biplanes SSW bound, guessing about 500ft of separation and 800 or 1,000 AGL. Seeing a couple of old biplanes adds to the ambiance of country life. I’m sure many others along your route enjoyed seeing the biplanes overhead.

I joined the ranks! (with a partner BTer Shane VandeVoort it will live in Pella IA at his homedrome)

1940 Meyers OTW. S/N 13 of 102 built
165 Warner

As Shane's son Sullivan (12 yr old) says, "It lands like a butterfly with sore feet."

And I say, "the anthesis of a Stearman. Absolutely delicate and elegant."
