Congratulations, Doug! She’s a beauty.

The friend who taught me to fly his Champ also owned an OTW. He would have gladly taught me to fly it too, but I’m just too big. My shins heat the front seat and I can only get my toes on the bar going up to the rudder pedals, not the pedals themselves. And forget brakes.

He had me get in it once to work the throttles while he propped it (chocked). My entire face was above the windscreen, and my shoulders were so snug against the side of the cockpit opening that I could hardly get my arms out to find a way to wriggle out.

I'm 6'1" and it's snug to get in and out of, but once I am in it, it is comfortable.

Congratulations on the OTW Doug. I flew one based in San Antonio many years ago and it was a delightful aircraft.

Last week I went to the Waco Classic factory in Battle Creek (KBTL) to pick up my new (to me) Waco and had the pleasure of touring the facility. Dieter Morszeck, the former owner of Rimowa luggage who famously reverse engineered a Junkers F13, bought the company and has invested heavily in expanding the beautiful facility. Aside from putting a German touch to the whole operation, he also put in a very nice and good restaurant (Waco Kitchen) which makes for a good $100 dollar hamburger (or bratwurst) stop. Anyone in the midwest looking for a place to eat and look at pretty airplanes should drop by.

Thanks for the tip, but I could see that turning into a $300k bratwurst stop! :bugeye:

Same. I think Wacos are beautiful. How are they to fly?

I can see this turning into a 300K bratwurst....

They are wonderful - my airplane is very well rigged and flies as well as it looks.

Alex,

Congratulations on your beautiful airplane! I know you've been looking for a while and getting one from the factory is the ultimate way to do it.

I love the simple white and burgundy paint scheme. It looks just like Michael McCafferty's "Spirit of Adventure" he flew around Europe.

If you haven't read about his tours they are great reads. His first, the American Tour, is especially on point as he describes his visit to the Waco Classic factory a couple of decades ago. Michael's writing is what got me into Waco flying...

Thanks Tony. I took a lot of your advice into account when going through the process, and this airplane really checked all the boxes. Plus dealing with the factory has been a real pleasure. What a great group of people. Let's coordinate schedules and perhaps I could fly up to your neck of the woods and meet for lunch (I'm in FW so not so far in "Waco" terms).

Holler at me if you all do this and I’ll join for dessert. I’m in a Stearman, so I won’t make it in time for lunch.
:D

Ran down to Robbie Vajdos’s Under the Wire Fly-In down on the south coast of Texas on Friday. I love these little fly-ins in out of the way places. A buddy took this nice snap of my Stearman just at sunrise.

It has been a couple of months since I flew my Waco down from the factory at Battle Creek to Houston. It was cold and slow moving down battling low ceilings, cold weather and windy conditions over five days. Now that I have had a chance to enjoy it down in kinder weather, it has been a fun and wonderful experience. Below are some photos including an afternoon I took my son and one of my daughters flying.

By the way, while visiting the Waco Factory, they had this beauty which is the Ju F-13 replica the owner built a few years back and which Waco may start producing again.
