This Grumman Mallard landed behind me at KTVR yesterday. It's on its way to Australia, having just been sold. The pilot said there are only seven of them flying. Beautiful bird.

As it was heading to the runway for takeoff, I grabbed the Nikon and shot this video.

Mallards are very cool.

In connection with a Mallard accident I was working on years ago in Canada, I had the opportunity to spend a day at Frakes Aviation in Cleburne, TX. Frakes owned the Mallard type certificate at that time, and they had the tooling, equipment and expertise to virtually build a new Mallard around a data plate. Sheet metal shop, engine shop, upholstery shop, woodworking shop, etc. Their workmanship was superb.

Nice, that would be the ultimate flying Winnebago.

It does't exactly leap into the air, does it?

Will always remind me of the tv show, Tales of the Brass Monkey. Everybody is probably too young to remember.......

Don't know. I don't know the history of this plane. It just appeared, the guy who hung the engines asked for Putt (he's pretty well known in round-engine circles), got fuel, and left. I was happy to be able to get some pix.

Thanks, Jay.

Sorry for the shakes. No tripod. Hand holding a 300mm (equivalent) and manual focus. Manual exposure, too. Had to "iris" down at the end.

Love the variable ND filter for that!

Just a grab shot, but I was glad to get that piece of history taking off.

Some V35 is missing its antenna!

Rare that you see a flying V on something else.
