So funny. They introduce the Icon A5 by saying "what would you think if Santa showed up at your house in this new airplane"? Then the other host says "haha, where's he gonna put the presents"?

It actually looks good too. Kinda "Bond-esque"

The things I love about it:

Folding wings.

Amphibious.

I'd love for my Bo to be able to land on water or land and not have the penalty of floats.

The A5 is a great idea, it just need more power and more size. I hope they do well with it.

But, at $250,000 I don't think it'll work.

100HP engine?

150lb useful load?

my take on it is that it is a cute toy. If you buy a jet ski, or a lotus Elise, or a motorcycle, you might also buy one of these.

I've seen it many times in person. I'm no engineer but based on being around planes all the time I would venture to say the only way this plane will work is with at least a 250HP engine strapped on.

100HP is just too unrealistic.

Bingo!

How do they get to this level in life and not know this? They're smart enough to get this thing on the Today Show. They're not smart enough to know that nobody is going to pay $250K for such limited capability?

Why wouldn't you just buy one of these. http://www.lakeamphib.com/lakeamphib.htm?
It is already certified and carries 4-6 people for the same cost!!

Agreed, saw it a OSH last year and I though the price was in the $150 range, which is still too much for a 100hp (way underpowered) plane.

I like the concept, the the mechanics for folding wings just look too heavy and complicated. There's other choices out there. Get a Widgeon.....
