About once a year I get to fly a Bravo. Ut is a very nice handling jet. Basically flys like a fast 172. Needs a lot of trim when flaps are applied. 35k yields 390 knots true. Looking at the EFIS display can anyone spot the error I made?

Crappy video with my iphone also:

Didn't set standard pressure in the flight levels. I'm surprised the EFIS doesn't have an annunciator or reminder of some sort.

You got it Charles. Set it in the backup box, but not the primary. I have not flown a plane yet that reminds you, though.

:D Yep - when you fly stuff that goes this fast it is probably not a bad idea. Although, a checklist probably would not help unless you are constatly looking at it to remind yourself to set the baro. I was still trying to remember how to run all the gadgets and just plain forgot.

It's not a mistake. It's vertical SLOP. :D

Now that's good. I'm going to remember that if I'm ever off and say I'm deviating vertically. I am surprised Center didn't ask about it.

Transition altitude/level is a standard call-out in turbine operations for that very reason. We don't have a cruise checklist at my airline but we are required to cross-check all 3 altimeters at level off for RVSM purposes (which would catch this error). Further, our 737's will give us a message if we are above 18,000 feet with a non-standard altimeter setting.

Neal - yep, good idea. We only had friends in the back for passengers and he was going over systems with me which pulled our attention away from the Baro setting.

Had the error been more than .2 IN I am sure we would have heard from ATC. I noticed the setting error descending out of 19k when the 1k warning beep was made. I was getting ready to set the baro and noticed that I had not set on the way up to 350.

Todd,

Are you trained/certified to operate in RVSM airspace?

Sure am and the plane is certified as well. Like I said, I fly this plane about once a year. If it had been in the King Air doing my normal flow I would have not missed that. I wasn't PIC anyway even though I flew the plane 100% of the trip.

Good deal...when one only flies in the flight levels once or so a year they might not have known about it so I wanted to point you to a quick and easy course just in case.

When passing through FL180 on the way up (and down) just say out loud "Transition" and you'll never forget to hit the "STD" button (or dial it in if it doesn't have one).
