I don't know if this is the result of running a tank dry or operating LOP.

The Navy used a training carrier in Lake Michigan to get pilots carrier-qualified. They didn't have to worry about the submarine threat up there.

BTW, I read this - I didn't remember it.

Actually, I suspect the pilot taxied over the edge while doing a run-up and listening to music - all at the same time.

After he was brought up from the hangAr deck.

And running a tank dry.

Getting ready for an IFR formation flight.

Followed by a landing that exceeded the demonstrated crosswind.

But had to dive back in to recover the book he was reading .........

They pull planes out of there every once in a while. If you hit the NAS Pensacola air museum, they have an exhibit about the carrier training program and the recovery of planes that ditched. They have an unrestored plane on display and another that's been restored. This is the first Corsair I recall hearing about being recovered.
