I have been thinking about getting a Cub as a second plane just to stooge around the local paddocks. I have a bit of time in Supercubs, but what has appealed to me is a J3 Cub as it can be registered in the Ultralight Category, releasing it from the constraints associated with GA.
I mentioned this to a Cub owner friend, who said that I would not be able to fly a J3 from the front seat at 5'10" and 230lbs, any thoughts?

Howdy John - sorry haven't answered your PM..just been slack - was great to catch up with you in Echuca and I am most impressed you haven't mentioned my 'drinking trick' in this august place

Last I looked there was a nice looking 1976 Supercub with good engine time remaining for sale in Melbourne for circa 65k...probably get it for 55k.

Then there is the LSA registered Carbon Cub...awesome bit of kit...essentially a Super Cub with more oomph

PIC sits in back of J3 anyway so maybe not an issue - unless its a CofG issue?

It's been a long time since I logged J3 time, but J3's are solo'ed from the rear seat anyway. It's no big deal flying solo from the rear seat, and with a passenger or rear ballast, as long as the weight and balance works, you can fly from the front seat.

Go for it! The most fun flying I've ever had was in a CAP J3 or a 7AC Champ. Don't recall if it was here or another board where someone commented that flying a J3 was the only time he'd ever been chased by a dog and almost got caught.

Shows, I haven't any experience with the J3.
Some of my most enjoyable flying has been stooging around the paddocks in a Supercub.

Chuck, one of the classiest inverted manouvres I have had the pleasure to witness.

I was part-owner of a J-3 for two years and never once flew from the front seat. You get used to the back. That's one way a Cub makes a real stick-and-rudder man out of you: you have to fly without reference to anything on the panel. :pilot:

Get one...you will always keep it no matter what happens to the other airplanes.

I had that happen at a privately owned, public use grass strip.

As I was taxiing, a dog came out and ran alongside the A-1A Husky I was in. When I brought the power up for takeoff, he ran out in front of me and I couldn't see him. I didn't want to hit the dog (and I really didn't want the dog to hit the prop) so I pulled the power off. When I did that, he slowed up and dropped back alongside again. I kept rolling, I ran the power up again and the same thing happened.

I figured I gotta be smarter than this dog, so on the third try (this is a really along runway for a Husky), I did a up/back/up with the throttle which got the dog out of step and I left him behind.

I haven't been back to that strip since.

I just sold a Legend Cub Light Sport. I really enjoyed the plane and have regrets for selling it. The Legend Cub usually is flown from the front seat solo due to wing tanks and no forward fuel tank. I am 6'2 and while it is tight it was fine for me. You have the option of an O-200 or the Jabiru. It was as much fun as you can have in the air on only 5 GPH. The Cubcrafters light sport is a little more money but it gives you flaps and more comfort. The Carbon Cub is another world for performance and I expect I will own one someday.

I just got back from ferrying a Super Cub on tundra tires from Orlando to Minnesota and I haven't had that much fun flying in a long time! I have GOT to get one!

Hi John,

"i, sure it will fit into your srtip there in Oz! ALso, I Like your videos.

I've owned several J3's, and I am impressed with the Legend Cub.
One bad thing, the market for very nice J3's has increased since the Legend came out.

I recently helped one owner change his prop to a ground adjustable Sensenich.

Here are weight & balance scenarios we computed.

John,

Take the plunge. I just spoke for this 160 hp PA-18. I am buying it from a friend in AK. He is bringing it down shortly.

That is a nice looking Cub.

Leisa and I might be going to the NT and Broome in July, we may come back over the centre and if we drift right of track enough....we might come and do some grape juice testing :peace:
