Back when I worked in the space program, and old engineer told me what happened to Vanguard when it lifted off and then shut down. He said when the electrical connections to the pad were pulled apart during liftoff, but that also removed the ground connection to the engines, causing them to shut down. They fixed that by adding a "trailing ground" which maintained contact until the vehicle was several feet in the air. Live and learn...
