I just spoke with one of my friends who works at Cirrus. They have received FIKI certification for their new SR22's. Pretty cool stuff. Supposedly there was a lot of changes to their TKS system in order to make it happen. Announcement to come out officially on Monday.

From a marketing perspective, that should be great for them.

From an accident statistics standpoint maybe not so much.

From a realworld use perspective, I'm probably not one to trust a Cirrus for FIKI. Call me chicken.

If the FAA certifies it using the same process as any other FIKI-certified airplane, why would it be any more dangerous? How much Cirrus time do you have (including time accumulating ice, etc)?

Approved for Flight into Known Icing conditions. This requires the manufacturer or STC holder to perform in-flight testing of the ice-fighting ability to specified standards.

(as opposed to 'full de-ice' or 'inadvertent ice' which indicates de-icing or anti-icing equipment that hasn't been actually tested on whether it provides adequate protection for the aircraft)

Flight into know ice. Means you can fly in ice without getting in trouble. Does not mean it's smart.

It has nothing to do with Cirrus vs anything. It has to do with the sensibility of flying a piston engine airplane into ice. Yes, if your airplane is FIKI you can legally fly into icing conditions. However some think...at least I think...that ice needs a turbine. You just don't have the same capabilities in a piston airplane.

Now, if you want to be specific toward a Cirrus, I am interested how they are going to deal with those big ice catchers hanging down under the airplane. :ohno:

I think it is defined as being able to legally fly yourself into trouble.

Probably similar to the Cessna Caravan. With TKS strips on the struts and a thingy that washes it over the wheel-fairing.

I have to admit that I am a distance fan of the Cirrus, I have no time in them so I don't know how they fly but the aircraft looks, interior, power and now FIKI makes it very attractive.

However, it is this attractiveness that has made the aircraft terribly popular with folks that are not used to thinking as fast as it flies - they've been having a lot of accidents and they are somewhat more difficult to insure than other high performance singles.

I hope it works, I like the idea of hotly popular and innovative American products.
