I believe Stoots has the STC to install a square tail on a C model 172 or 175 with the stepped firewall. These have some airframe beef ups for more gross weight. The 175 also has more fuel capacity .
The conversion of these would make a better airplane than a 170 with big engine.
Though I go back and forth if I would rather the larger 175 fuel tanks or have the Flint slide in tip fuel tanks pumping into the smaller 172 main tanks.
The large shallow tanks spook me when run at low levels for saving weight in short spots. I would add Rear fuel lines from a late model 172 to allow venting to the tank vent and BOTH above 5000 ft.
Take a 172C with these mods and 180 gear. Then add the Atlee folding rear seats and a flip up jump door on the right for easy loading. Continental IO-360 for power. I would probably like that the best. But I'm a Continental guy so it's biased. I would want the Stock wing with VGs and Horton aileron gap seals only. But for structural reasons instead of doop leading edges not slow flight performance.
I did see a 185 with 206 seats and seat rails for the middle seats. That was interesting.

once in a blue moon you see a 175 for sale that was converted to tailwheel and O-360 power. While the O-470 conversions seem ponderously heavy up front (I've flown one of those) I always thought the lycoming converted C-175 would make a nice machine (although admittedly I've not been in one)

We are finishing a Continental IO-360 210hp conversion on a 1964 172 which will be followed by a Cessna 170A conversion with a lot of mods. I’ll report back on the performance. I have a friend with a 1963 172 which is getting an overhauled O-300 so it should be a good comparison.
