A friend of mine just bought this seaplane (oldest known active and airworthy seaplane):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNGsYpCczBQ

He will be keeping it there and continuing to get advanced training. He also bought a Curtis NP-40N that has been fully restored in Australia and is being shipped to his place in Oregon. I have videos of this aircraft also if anyone is interested.

Yes, as far as I understand. It was for sale and the locals were afraid that some foreign wealthy person would buy it and remove it from it's home.

Eric had undergone extensive seaplane instruction in this aircraft and absolutely fell in love with it. He respects the interests of the local community and has pledged to keep it there.

Quite a story.

Interesting story: During training, the original Alpha-Romeo engine (even though in excellent working order) leaks oil and it sprays back on the pilot in the front seat. Eric was so taken by this that he did not want to clean himself off when he landed, thinking this was how aviators experienced early flight.

He is totally passionate about flying. Next chapter after the seaplane training in Italy is taking delivery of his totally restored TP-40N (with brand new never flown Allison engine) in Oregon after a few years of work in Australia. I am promised a ride in it as soon as he gains more experience in it (he has been taking instruction for a few years now).

It's all good.

I've known Eric off and on for about 20 years or so. He is the son of my friend Mark who I got back into sport parachuting in about 1997 after a layoff of 35 years or so.

I first jumped in 1971 so I was familiar with the type of gear that Mark was used to. Things had changed drastically (obviously) and I was able to instruct Mark on a comprehensive transition to modern equipment (main/reserve canopies, deployment methods, emergency procedures, the whole gammit). He got re-started (with help from a few instructors at our drop zone) and is still jumping to this day. I retired from active sport parachuting in 2004 (for a number of reasons).

At the time I was an S&TA (Safety and Training Advisor) for our drop zone at the Sonoma County Airport.

Eric is 33 years old now and fully retired. A genius without question, he was extremely successful in (I think) crypto currency. He devotes his time to aviation and caring for his 3 year old daughter while his wife is going through medical residency in the New York area.

As I mentioned earlier, quite a story.

Caproni was on my bucket list pre-covid, but never happened - gorgeous airplane. Sounds like it has a great new owner.

Does anyone know if they are giving rides in this? I follow them on Instagram and would love to take a flight around Como in this when we are there next summer.

Perhaps. This might be a good place to inquire:
