A rich relative dies. You're about to inherit a fleet of aircraft, and a super large amount of money to operate them forever. The will says you can sell nothing. Your goal is to have fun.

How much money. You can afford to take your B-29/F-18 on joy rides! And the lawyers will "work with" the FAA on the paperwork .. not your problem.

Would you rather inherit
- A fleet of WWII aircraft
- A fleet of Korean War aircraft
- A fleet of Vietnam War aircraft
- A fleet of modern aircraft

And which aircraft just become your favorite.

I’ve had my fun with the warbirds, I’ll take the modern comforts.

Easy: Modern Fleet with all the $ to maintain forever.

Put fleet on 135.

Blow all that money picking and choosing planes from the other three fleets to have fun with.

Use Modern Fleet for personal travel as needed.

Does the inheritance come with unlimited OpEx budget?

If so I'd probably take big boy single pilot jet like a Phenom 300 or Pilatus PC24.

If I gotta buy the gas, then a single engine turbo prop.

I would keep my RV-6 and maybe have a glider and a helicopter for fun on the side.

What a neat question and thought gatherer!

If I must pick from the various fleets that you offered, I would pick - Modern. I think I would use and enjoy these planes more in everyday life.

If I get to pick and choose 7-10 of ANY planes… that is a different question.

I like the original question and stay with my answer.

Rest assured a Wing Derringer and a Beech 56 would be in my hangar somewhere.

I miss my old Super Cub, so I guess it would be nice to have one. It complements the F33A nicely, and getting in and out of it is good exercise.

With age my ego doesn’t need much shrinking, but a Pitts Special would remind me that flying accurately and well requires practice and humility to keep learning. My butt clenching muscles would also get a work out on each landing, especially if narrow tarmac with a bit of a crosswind.

A colleague waxes lyrical of his time as crew on a Lear 35, in a worldwide medevac operation. Getting type rated and loaning it out for charitable missions with a good crew (command, worldwide ops support and engineering) would be a nice way to spend the dinero :)
